After updating to Nextcloud 32, all users must watch a video before they log in

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 32.0.0
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    * Linux 6.12.24-Unraid, using the Linuxserver "nextcloud" Docker container
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • nginx/1.28.0 (fpm-fcgi)
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • Linuxserver "swag" Docker container
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.4.13
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • Yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • After updating to Nextcloud 32, but I do not regularly use the web UI
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Docker (see OS entry) on unRAID
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • no

Summary of the issue you are facing:

When any user logs in to the Nextcloud web UI for the first time after the update to version 32, they are forced to watch a video and click to dismiss a modal dialog after it finishes:

This is particularly bad when autoplay is disabled (as it should be!) because the first frame is blank. Frankly, it gives the impression that the server has been pwned in those circumstances

As the server admin, I do not want users to be forced to watch a video and then dismiss a modal (because I get the complaints!). After logging in, they should be taken straight to their dashboard, without having to click through an advertisement for the software they are already using.

How do I permanently disable this?

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Log in to a server running Nextcloud 32 with a user that has not logged in to it since the upgrade.

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

Configuration

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

As an aside, the preamble at the top of the support template should probably recommend people delete the collapsed “details” section. If you still count as a new user, that thing alone contains enough links to prevent your post being accepted…

It’s the firstrunwizard app. It can be disabled:

Hmm. I haven’t tested it, but I thought this was remedied recently:

Thanks — I’ve now disabled it.

It might have been better to not show it for users who had already been using NextCloud since before it was implemented — and to have some text which indicated it was a “first run” thing, rather than being shown for a new major version, as that’s certainly the impression I got from the presence of a “What’s New?” button…

From the bug report, it looks like Firefox doesn’t display a Play button on videos that have autoplay disabled, and you have to work out it’s a video and right-click to play it or show the controls.

Happily, Vivaldi overlays a Play button in those circumstances — though simply adding the controls attribute to the <video> tag would fix that for everyone. I don’t know why so many designers hate having the controls visible

Yeah I think that was inadvertent (after upgrading to a new major release, it should show directly the whats new page and not the video again · Issue #1673 · nextcloud/firstrunwizard · GitHub).

Thanks — though, are you saying that running the command to disable first run will still show a “what’s new” popup for everyone?

I’d want to disable that as well: no popups, just your dashboard — and, ideally, you’d be able to configure it to skip the dashboard and just go straight to your files…

No, if you disable the first run wizard, it won’t show up at all.

You can either disable the Dashboard app entirely, or, if you want to keep it, you can set Files as the default app to open on login in your config.php:

'defaultapp' => 'files',

See also:
https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/stable/admin_manual/configuration_server/config_sample_php_parameters.html#defaultapp

Users will then still be able to change it back to being the dashboard (or any other app) as their default app individually by going to ‘Personal settings’ > ‘Appearance and accessibility’ > ‘Navigation bar settings’.

EDIT: Appearently I was wrong with that last part. If you configure a default app in config.php users cannot change it anymore:

Well, that was embarrassing — I never noticed that individual users could change it in the appearance and accessibility settings

A shame the administrator can’t put “Administration Settings” in there, but otherwise that’s going to solve the problem without having to mess with the config.

Thanks!

You can get sort of close: you can add Administrator settings as an External link (using the external app) then add it anywhere in your navigation.
