Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 32.0.2
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • OMV 7 Debian 12
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • NextCloud standard Apache
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • Traefik v3
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • replace me
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • I have this issue only with Global Protect
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • always seen only with Global Protect
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Docker compose with OMV 7
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • I use LetEncrypt with Traefik

Summary of the issue you are facing:

After to logon to my NextCloud, I have the message “Unexpected error: Failed to fetch” each time I try to navigate on the site. I have this issue only when I initiate the connectipon using the VPN Global Protect

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Connect to my NextCloud site, I have a first error message “could not load photos folder”

  2. Navigate on any site item “Unexpected error: Failed to fetch”

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

Hi,

Before to start the investigation, I would like to know first, if you have already heard of this problem with a kind of VPN like Global Protect ?

In advance, thank for your feedback.

Without knowing your network topology or any other context it’s impossible to do more than guess.

Presumably a DNS, routing, or firewall matter.

Check your web browser inspector, particularly the Network tab (instructions are in the support template) to see what transactions are failing. You can probably reverse engineer from there…

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

On my side I investigated regarding to this curious issue, it seems the VPN Global Protect splits some HTTPS Post/Put request that are too long (Nextcloud is verbose with a lot fetch command)

So, my Traefik reverse proxy doesn’t understand this “split state” and reject the request.

/.. Traefik log error message when a refresh is done on my Nextcloud site with the VPN:

2026-02-02T10:12:22+01:00 DBG log/log.go:245 > http2: server connection error from x.x.x.x:52513: connection error: PROTOCOL_ERROR

../

It’s for this reason I can logon, browse some part of the site and I have sometimes “Unexpected error: Failed to fetch” when “fetch” command is initiated.

No way exists to fix this issue as well in side Nextcloud than Traefik, the only possibility is to exclude the NextCloud URL from Global Protect.

I asked to my company to exclude my Nextcloud URL but my request has been rejected …

I hope the post will help some persons who meet this issue.

Regard,
