Persistent Issue with Android-to-Android Video Calls in Nextcloud Talk

I am writing to report a persistent issue with video calls between Android devices using Nextcloud Talk in my self-hosted Nextcloud AIO environment. Despite regular updates, this problem has remained unresolved for over a year.

System Details:

  • Server: Ubuntu 24.04
  • Nextcloud AIO Version: 10.0.0
  • Nextcloud Talk Version: 20.0.2

Issue Description:

  • Android-to-Android Calls: Audio functions correctly, but video is not transmitted. :x:
  • PC-to-Android Calls: Both audio and video function correctly. :white_check_mark:
  • Group Calls (PC and Android): Both audio and video function correctly. :white_check_mark:

Client Details:

  • Android Version: 14
  • Nextcloud Talk App Version: 20.0.6

I have observed that this issue has been reported by other users as well. For instance, a GitHub issue describes a similar problem where video is not received on Android devices during calls. Additionally, a Nextcloud community forum post discusses video conferencing issues on Android devices, suggesting that the problem may be related to the use of Janus version 1.x.

Given the duration of this issue and its impact on the usability of Nextcloud Talk for Android-to-Android video calls, I am seeking guidance on potential solutions or workarounds. Specifically, I would like to know if there are any updates or configurations that can resolve this problem, or if it is a known issue with an expected fix in future releases.

Troubleshooting Nextcloud Talk Issues - Solutions

1. Issue: Video Calls on Android Devices

Problem Description:
During video calls in the Nextcloud Talk app for Android, only the local camera feed is visible on both devices. The video feed from the other caller does not appear.

Solution:

  • During the call, turn the camera off and back on using the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
  • This method has been successfully tested on Nextcloud Talk for Android version 20.1.0.

2. Issue: Screen Sharing on Desktop PC in Firefox Browser

Problem Description:
Screen sharing works properly on the first attempt in the Firefox browser. However, if screen sharing is stopped and restarted, it becomes non-functional. In some cases, the microphone may be muted, or the camera feed may stop working.

Solution:

  • Use a different browser, such as Brave, where this issue does not occur.
