[Nextcloud Office] errors and missing parts displaying docs

As far as I know, this is an AppImage that is downloaded to your server from the Nextcloud app store when you install the app, and then executed when you open a document. Its configuration is essentially hard-coded, so regarding the first two warnings at least, I don’t think there’s much you can do except wait for the app to be updated..

However, I’m not sure about the missing parts of the documents. This could be related to the third warning, which suggests a networking/proxy issue.

If you think that everything is OK in this regard on your end, you may also want to open an issue here unless there is already one.

However, I’m not sure about the missing parts of the documents. This could be related to the third warning, which suggests a networking/proxy issue.

This is the main issue as I can’t even use Collabora, other errors will be investigated in the futur once displaying issue are gone !

As a built-in app I should not have to manage any proxy setting ?

My read from reviewing the code is that “Poorly performing proxying of all network requests” message merely indicates you’re using the Built-in CODE Server`s integrated proxy mode. This mode is the technical foundation for how the Built-in CODE server functions. I don’t see any indications there are any actual performance tests/etc behind this.

The Built-in CODE server app isn’t a recommended deployment model for CODE+Nextcloud outside of testing / light use because it generally has performance challenges, is very sensitive to the deployment environment, and can be flaky. (It is, however, a very convenient way to install CODE for casual use with Nextcloud).

The production/recommended/best performing approach is a dedicated CODE installation (doesn’t have to be Docker; bare metal is fine) then pointing the Nextcloud Office integration app to that external CODE instance.

I presume the message in effect reflects this. It was added fairly recently and the commit message is titled “ServerAudit - detect and highlight sub-optimal PHP proxy if in use.”.

I am the only user of the Nextcloud instance so CODE should be enough?

And it was working perfectly some weeks ago before an update, but can’t remember when or what (Nextcloud or CODE app). I fact, before updating, I did not have any errors.

I am the only user of the Nextcloud instance so CODE should be enough?

That’s not for me to say. It won’t be as performant as a dedicated install, but it may be completely reasonable for your needs.

I fact, before updating, I did not have any errors.

The audit message for the proxy mode was added quite recently (couple months ago). It isn’t necessarily even associated directly with the problematic behavior you’re experiencing.

25.04.7.2

I haven’t fully follows this thread so I’m not sure why your experiencing the particular behavior you are, but
CODE is fairly rapidly developed. There are already new releases. It’s possible it’s some edge case that isn’t impacting too many people but is impacting you:

https://www.collaboraonline.com/code-25-04-release-notes/

The Built-in CODE app (which is derived from the above doesn’t appear to have received the most recent CODE updates as of yet.

I updated Nextcloud to v32.0.5, PHP to version 8.4.17 and CODE Server is 25.4.702 (17/11/2025 -no new version available on NC appstore). Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is up to date.

Still having the issue  (PDF viewer works fine, Collabora interface is pretty fast loading & using, only the content is problematic)

You should take the time to setup a Docker container of Collabora along with a reverse proxy and its own subdomain (for example running as “collabora.yourdomain.example”). This should solve your issues here.

It is not (only) about securing the host. Inside Collabora each document session is also sandboxed - so not all documents are edited in one single office server process but each session starts a new office process running in its own sandbox. And the RAM of existing servers does not have to be purchased. Hetzner for example still gives you a small VM for about 4-5 EUR per month which is totally sufficient for Collabora. I recently have set up Nextcloud including Talk with High Performance Backend and Collabora for small user group with 1 TB of storage on a server which is about 11 EUR per month plus storage for about 4 EUR per month.

I realize that the Docker solution is the most secure and effective, but ultimately it only circumvents the problem. Why an app officially available in Nextcloud’s appstore, CODE, does not work on a standard installation?

It seems to me that this bug should be fixed, or else the built-in CODE should be removed from the store.

I’m a little confused because installing Docker, a reverse proxy, Collabora, etc. will require more admin time and resources (is 4GB of RAM enough?), and I just wanted a Collabora that works, basically…

It may also be, that the VPS is just not powerful enough. The Collabora server requires at least 4 cores and a minium of 1 GB free RAM. This does not change with the built in server - as this will only run the server in a different way and it will be even slower than a Docker based solution.

Edit: and my offer is still valid - I can help with setting this up (including daily or weekly automatic updates etc.).

But it does work. At least it is for many others. Not sure why you’re experiencing this.

Let’s back up a moment. It appears you skipped the support template in your original report. Can you provide some info such as the web inspector (Console and Network) output when the display problem occurs?

Also, can you reproduce this problem in:

  • incognito mode / a private window?
  • a different browser?

What browser?

Hello @jtr here is some usefull info wich completes the one on the firts post. Hope it will be usefull. The missing info is because I am not very at ease to read logs or console info. I you need more please tell me what I have to do.

Thanks for your help !

Today I tried to uninstall/reinstall Nextcloud Office & CODE but unfortunately bug still remains.

I am almost out of idea.. and I think I’ll install docker version of Collabora but it’s a mess because I don’t know what reverse proxy I am using and I hope my 4CPU/4Gb RAM VPS will be enough.

Once again I would like to thank you for your kind help and you offer to take time to help me. Give me a little more time to try to find a solution on my own, but I’ll keep your offer in mind and I’ll accept it in the end if I’m stuck

I will be at FOSDEM 2026 in Brussels this weekend and travelling a lot from tomorrow on. So assistance is only possible next week from Wednesday on.

I am having the exact same issue where content will be missing from the display. Previously it had been working for the past year with no issues, and around the same time as OP I’ve started having the same issues.

I’m running local hardware with more than enough resources for this using the built in Colabora app. Seems the only solution is to outright replace it with something external. My guess is that having 64GB of RAM and a CPU that overall idle’s throughout use isn’t the limiting factor, even if people have insisted on performance issues, which may as well be happening, but not due to the hardware itself.

I agree with you that this doen’t seems to be a resource issue but rather a bug. Everything was working fine before an update a few months ago. I’ve been using the word processor and spreadsheet for years and have never experienced RAM or CPU overload on my VPS even if it’s a small config.

Still looking for a solution without having to install docker or configure reverse proxy…

I have the same problem as TheDerf (the display problem - missing parts - and the same 3 errors when opening the document).

My installation is not using docker or reverse proxy : simple Nextcloud (now 33.0.2) on Apache server. The server is debian 13 on self hosted virtual machine, 6 cores (very low usage), 32GB RAM, SSDs. I use the embedded CODE installed via the apps).

In my case, the problem seems somehow related to Firefox (but not only):

  • Using Firefox, I get the 3 errors and the display misses parts, either over Internet or locally (another virtual machine on same host).
  • Using Edge, I still get the 3 errors on opening, but the display is correct.
  • Using Collabora Demo (actually a Nextcloud instance), display is correct with Firefox.

After doing some tests, I also found (as @red33) no issue displaying docs using Chrome web browser on my mac ! Everything is working and displaying fine under Chrome.

So it not a issue server side but rather a bug with browser & app (Safari/Firefox and, what I think it’s crazy, even iOS/iPadOS official NC.app have display issue !)

Hope someone will find a solution because for know I have to disable NC office and built-in collabora as they do not work..
