Looking for tips, advise, best practice on NextCloud: New user

I have just set it up. When I logged in to the first screen I saw what specified the account name and password, now the next screen is the login screen which asks for a password and email but it did not ask on the first screen and there is no registration so I’m stuck in the login screen without having registered my details.

Check it from cca 17:30

I have a question, I am checking out NextCloud and I was wondering, does NextCloud have an option where you can put your files in a folder on your desktop and they sync up to the Nextcloud online folder?

Hi,

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but some of your recent questions (like the one about file sync) come across as if you haven’t really looked for any information outside this forum.

Nextcloud has solid official documentation, plenty of tutorials on YouTube, and even a basic AI prompt like “how does Nextcloud sync work” will give you an instant and accurate answer — including two-way sync, desktop client basics, etc.

This forum is a great place when you’re running into issues that aren’t well-documented or need help with something specific.
But for basic questions that are already well covered, it’s a good idea to do a bit of research first. It’s simply more efficient for everyone.

Alright noted

I tried to upload a 26 GB folder to my NextCloud file. Is there a way to track the upload progress? It’s a large file and I can’t be sure how long it would take. From the looks of it, it uploaded one folder so far

@mouse77 Alternatively, you could start somewhere and work your way through it, as most users who answer questions on this forum did. Then, as you progress, you can ask more specific questions.

You have received plenty of suggestions on where to start. I for myself played around with web hosting years ago, before I eventually switched to a Linux server and manually set up Nextcloud. It then took me another while to switch from Google to Nextcloud completely.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to learn the basics through trial and error, and you need an alternative to M365 or Google Drive by tomorrow, I suggest signing up for managed Nextcloud.

Alternatively, you could of course pay someone €250 per hour for consulting, and then sign up for a service contract worth a few thousand euros per year. However, this is usually only offered to business customers because home users are generally unwilling to pay that much. Which is probably why they then ask broad questions on forums, expecting someone to do it for them for free.

Unfortunately, this tactic only works for relatively simple tasks, such as setting up a smart TV. For more complex tasks, such as setting up a fully-fledged file-sharing and groupware solution, you will need to invest time and/or money to achieve your goal.

This is not a technical question. I am using the software now. I was just wondering if when there was some visual feedback where you could see if the upload was happening because it’s 26 GB folder subfolders inside. There are times when large uploads don’t transfer well and it might require uploading one folder at a time. Same apply here as well? That was the question

While uploading, a progress bar appears at the top of the Files app to indicate that an upload is in progress:

If the upload is completed successfully, the progress bar disappears and the following message appears at the top right:

grafik

If something went wrong during the upload process, an error message should appear instead.

However, these messages disappear after a few seconds, so unless you watch your screen at the moment the upload finishes, you wouldn’t necessarily know whether the upload was successful or not.

So, for large uploads involving lots of files distributed across several subfolders, which take a long time, I would recommend using the desktop client rather than uploading them via the browser. This should also generally be more reliable.

That being said, if you regularly experience issues with uploads via the browser, you may still want to investigate this further. If you need assistance with this, please open a new thread and fill out the support template, providing all the necessary information for people to be able to help you.

Personal settings → Notifications → Sharing → select notification option “Mail” to receive an email, which is more persistent

Yeah but afaik this is only for uploads to a public share, not for regular uploads to your account.
