Help! Nextcloud deleted almost all my files!

My apologies I haven’t provided more detailed server info. I have turned the server off and don’t want to turn the server back on in case I overwrite deleted files.

So I was having a problem where some files weren’t syncing across my devices. In particular, my password master file. I’d tried various things to fix this but nothing seemed to work. Then I found this article (Sync client cancelling operations when trying to sync a folder) where the solution presented was:

I also faced several sync problems, I could always fix them with a manual workaround:

occ ‘files:scan --all’

occ ‘files:cleanup’

if already solved stop where, if not proceed with step 4

occ ‘maintenance:mode --on’

sign in to your mysql db and run: “delete from oc_file_locks where 1;”

occ ‘maintenance:mode --off

I got as far as step 3, and my password master file was syncing - I was ecstatic. Until I realised the price was that Nextcloud had deleted all the other files. And that included my Documents directory and every files I’ve saved there for the last very large number of years.

I’ve tried to restore the files using Nextcloud but couldn’t find anything to do that. I turned off the server to preserve the file structure in case I could still recover files. I tried extundelete (Linux server) and testdisk but no recoverable files could be found on both the server and my laptop - which I thought was weird.

I wondered if there was anything else I could do. Any suggestions will be very gratefully received, especially if they get some/all of my files back!

Hi @Theheliumkid - Sorry to hear about your troubles. Sounds like you’ve had a challenging day!

Well first of all, you have backups correct?

In any case, without knowing what was happening originally nor having any log entries it’s challenging to help unravel what happened.

None of the things you did above should have deleted any data, but a files:cleanup could have made an existing problem appear worse.

I’m curious whether your files are actually gone or not. When you say that it appeared all your files had been deleted, were you looking in the NC web UI?

Did you look in your data directory on your server from the command-line? Is there a directory in the data directory with same name as your username? Are you files located in it in a folder called files?

Also are you using an External Storage? (Like SMB/SFTP/etc shares mounted within NC?)

When you turn your server back on maybe:

  • copy your data/nextcloud.log file off of it somewhere so that you can look at it more closely (it’ll probably take some time to unravel since you were having problems before you did the above steps and we’re not sure what actually is the root cause).
  • either copy your config/config.php file or run occ config:list system to automatically generate a redacted version (post this)
  • check your data directory contents (see if there’s a folder for your user and a files folder under that

I do have a backup for that server but not for the files themselves because the server is supposedly backing up the files across other devices.

I’ve checked in the data directory using the command line and the vast majority of files aren’t there. I’m not using external storage, the files are supposed to be in the directory called files.

I have the error log but that is over a GB. I also have the nextcloud.log file and its older file, nextcloud.log.1. The first one, the current nextcloud.log file just reflects that it can’t sync with my Windows device because there is no file to sync. The earlier file seems to show a Repair operation happening and after that, the first of the missing file notifications (see below).

Any thoughts would be very gratefully received but I fear my data is gone forever. :cry:

This article is more than 5 years old and referred to version 12.0.3. Common sense should have hinder you to proceed with that. One should completely negate such old hints and refer to newer help.

But that of course doesn’t bring your files back now either, it was just meant to be a warning to other people stopping by to read.

Did you look in the trash folder? Those files could still be in trash, eather on your client boxes and on the server side. On the server, you could have the versions of your files still present.

I would first disconnect all clients.
Then look if these folders exist:

/var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files_trashbin
/var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files_versions

and what it contain. The file names could be truncated, but that should be the minor problem for now.

If your files are still in trash, then you can restore them with

occ  trashbin:restore --all-users

I really hope that I could help with this. Losing data is a horrible experience. :cry:

File synchronization is not a backup strategy. Consider this: If you delete or corrupt a file on one device or something goes with with your server (possibly what happened here; not sure yet)) that messes with your files, that change is then propagated to all your devices. Please please immediately establish backups before proceeding further.

The logs you posted are from over a month ago and seem to be from a normal NC update/upgrade run (v26.0.3.2 → v27.0.08). Those repair steps there are normal. The only notable log entry there is this one, which was likely related to your original problem of being unable to sync your password file:

This original error message is notable because file_put_contents() shouldn’t fail with a “No such fail or directory” unless the folder /var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files/Phone already didn’t exist on disk.

I’m wondering if the real problem occurred long before you the occ files:* operations. You mentioned your original problem was that “some files weren’t syncing across devices”… was that original problem by chance impacting basically of your active/recently changed files?

Do you have any current log entries? Can you post maybe the oldest entry in it and the latest entry in it? And an entry or two from around the time period where you noticed your files were initially missing? We need some better context for where things truly went wrong and where they stand today.

The little bit I can see suggests your files (at least for your richard account) should all be in one or more of:

/var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files/
/var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files_trashbin/
/var/www/html/myservername/data/richard/files_versions/

Thank you. Sadly there were no files there and restoring the trashbin didn’t help either. I think I have to come to terms with my loss. :frowning:
