Difficulty manually transferring files to NextCloud

410 / 5.000
Dear all,
I’m trying to migrate my files from a samba server to nextcloud. I checked the folder permissions, but the database doesn’t contain the files, which is why it doesn’t show up on the web interface.

destination location
/var/www/nextcloud/data/myuser/files/personal_section

www-data permission checked www-data

I’ve already run the scan
su -s /bin/bash -c 'php /var/www/nextcloud/occ files:scan myuser www-data

Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

PASTE HERE

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

PASTE

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

PASTE HERE

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Apps

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

Hello @Cosmo_Elton,

welcome to the Nextcloud community! :handshake:

this doesn’t look right. occ command must be started as webserveruser (-u www-data) and the directory to scan should be from the users point of view (username in the data directory). if in doubt user -all for first run.

we had this discussion often look at topics tagged file_permission or occ or server_migration

Test the command from root:
sudo -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/occ files:scan --all

documentation

sudo apt install php-smbclient → install the smbclient for nextcloud
Then go to Adminsection, External Memory → mount your Sambashares there with User, Passwort, Share, IP of your server.

This is useful if you want to integrate SMB as external storage in Nextcloud. However, if you copy the files manually from SMB to /var/www/nextcloud/data/username/files, it is not necessary.

Only execute
sudo -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/occ files:scan --all
that Nextcloud database knows the new files in /var/www/nextcloud/data/username/files.

my small note, to work with smb (Samba) in Nextcloud.
I´d multiple times, where nextcloud crashed. To avoid data-lose, I saved all data in smb. It´s my “best-practice”.

Hello! @wwe

Sorry for my English (Google translator) is helping me.

I was able to execute the command according to the documentation.

I did exactly this (but I was unsuccessful!)

sudo -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/occ files:scan --all

command return

sudo -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/occ files:scan --all
sudo: could not resolve nextcloud machine: Unknown name or service

but I was unsuccessful!

I’m sorry nobody can help you based on such questions. Does it mean it failed, didn’t index the files etc. Provide details, logs etc. occ has also -v argument for more verbose output which might help to understand the problem.

this looks very well - do this users have any files stored in the system? what happens if a user adds new file through the web interface - do you see it on the storage? → if not you are looking in a wrong place.

it looks you are struggling with basic admin tasks - please look at 101: Self-hosting information for beginners and start learning required skills or switch to “managed Nextcloud” in case you want a solution which simply works.

I think so but I’ll keep trying
