Can't access Nextcloudpi URL through LAN

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 30.0.1.2

  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Armbian-unofficial 24.8.2 Bookworm \l . 6.6.45-current-bcm2711 (aarch64)

  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Apache, Unsure on the version
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • Not sure, I think this is what I’m looking to resolve
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • Unsure
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • Nope
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • Since installation
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Using Etcher to flash it to a Micro SD card
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • I don’t think so

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Hello,

I can’t connect to my Nextcloudpi installation on my LAN through the URL I set up. I can access the Web UI by using the IP address, but the Nextcloud App won’t take IP addresses. I’m not sure what to change in my Asus router settings to get this to work. I think I’m looking for something called NAT loop back, but I can’t find it in my router’s settings.

I’d be happy to provide more information or logs from “the basics” copy pasta.

Thank you for the help!

Hello @Spiffy,

welcome to the Nextcloud community! :handshake:

likely you can solve the problem using 101: Split-Brain DNS (split-horizon) configuration

That sounds like what I’m looking for, and thank you for the help.

I do have piHole running on my local network, and I’ve routed all LAN traffic through it. How would I set it up for split brain DNS? Or should I search the piHole forums?

Google searches have been giving me awfully generic or off topic answers.

Wait! Is this essentially what I need to do?

yes this is a shorter split-dns description.

In PiHole you define “local DNS” record (the term changed between versions) for your domain with right IP..

It was working for a while! Long enough for me to link 3 apps to a shared folder on the Pi.

But now it’s having other connection issues on the LAN. Let me know if I should go to some other threads and thank you for helping me out with this. You’ve been very helpful.

The PHB was crashing repeatedly. So I cleared the opcache and rebooted the NCP. Now it’s saying that it doesn’t trust the domain name that was working before. I put the IP address of the NCP in the “Trusted domains” list, but now it won’t connect on the LAN.

I also turned on dnsmasq and pointed it to the piHole, but I don’t know if that was wise.

Edit: I might have figured this out after shortly posting this. I had to make the trusted domain the full URL and now it works. I’m guessing it’s because I set the local DNS entry to the url without “www.” when the NCP was looking for the full URL.
