Can’t figure out HEIC previews

Can’t figure out how to get HEIC previews to work. Does any know how to and if not is there workarounds such as automatically converting HEIC to PNGs for all users?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Dear mod reading this post:
Yes I know a topic for this exists but it does not work for docker.

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I can’t preview HEIC images. The feature was removed it appears. Is there any way to convert all HEIC or HEIF images for all users to JPEGs? Or get HEIC images to preview some how?

Thanks!

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Try to view an HEIC image in nextcloud 31.0.1 docker
  2. Open an HEIC file on nextcloud 31.0.1 docker
  3. Try to get any previews of HEIC and HEIF photos

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
  • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers /formatters by those trying to help you.

I’m running Nextcloud on TrueNAS scale. Installed via the TrueNAS “discover apps” catalogue. It gives me a Dockerized verison of nextcloud 31.0.0.

I’m also struggling with HEIC images…

Unfortunately the Docker image from TrueNAS does not come with imagemagick installed in it, and I havent been able to add it - at least not a recent enough version to support HEIC.

I’m using the NC memories app to browse photos, but since most of my images are HEIC, I can’t really see what I am browsing, as there are no thumnails.

I was so hoping to be able to stop using google photos, but seems like there is still quite a long way before that will be possible.

Following this thread closely to see if any solutions comes out of it !

I have a feeling that this is not gonna be straight forward solving, and will require a lot of diffficult tinkering, and will probably break down the line as updates are coming in.

So I actually just gave up, and installed “immich” instead, as it natively supports HEIC, plus it has a bunch of other very useful features (facial recognition namely).

But just to be clear, this is an app unrelated to nextcluod, and runs in multiple docker dontainers on my server - outside of nextcloud. It just have access to my photo dir that NC also uses.
