Windows custom Folder Icons reset when shared

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • Nextcloud AIO v11.4.0
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian 12
  • Desktop client version:
    • Client Desktop 3.16.6 (Windows 11 24H2)
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • AIO

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Windows folder icons get reset when synced over nextcloud.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Set a custom folder icon by right-clicking on the folder and following the GUI to Change Icon
  2. Select an icon from the built-in windows icons (%SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll)
  3. Set the new folder appearance, it registers in the explorer
  4. Any change in the folder after that reverts the folder icon to the default.

This test has been carried out between two windows machines running the same OS version and the same Desktop client version.

Expected outcome:

The custom icon should be maintained across syncs on windows systems.

If not a bug, could a solution be offered in the docs? This doesn’t relate to full custom themes, but seems to have something to do with ignoring desktop.ini files.

The same issue was raised by this post, but no change has occured since.

Thanks!

Hi! Got the same issue here. I’m on Windows 11, Nextcloud desktop client 3.17.1.
Thanks!

I have the same issue on Windows 11 24H2 and Nextcloud Client Version 3.17.2.

The only icons that persist are the ones on the root of the Nextcloud sync folder when set by the Nextcloud Client. If you change the Nextcloud icon once, it cannot be reset again.

I would be grateful for any hint to resolve the issue (configuration, setting, or such).

Best regards.
