Windows Cant access NextCloud WebDav Server

Im trying to connect to my NextCloud server using WebDav on my file explore in windows 11, but its saying it cant connect. I was able to connect to it at one point, however, I ended up reinstalling NextCloud cause tit was too buggy for me, and now it wont connect. I didn’t do anything different, I don’t think. Any thoughts?

Is the feature “WebDAV” currently installed? - As far as I know, it does not become installed by default anymore.

Oh I guess not. How can I install WebDAV on Windows 11

cause I tried the WebDAV publishing and thats still not working. I think thats for if you want to host a WebDAV server on your windows 11 computer itself

Nextcloud has a WebDAV-server built in as well as CalDAV/CardDAV.
Windows WebDAV client can be added via Controlpanel - Programs and Features - Add/Remove Feature

hey so I got it working however Im running into another problem where when im trying to transfer something through file exploer it gets stuck at 99% for a little bit and then fails and says try again. This maybe a common issue maybe casue ive seen it before on the forums however i dont know if thisi s a Nginx or a NextCloud problem and what to fix

The log files will tell you more.

Maybe Microsoft Learn will help you to find a solution.

I usually don’t use M$-OS. Purely out of curiosity i was booting my Notebook with Win11 Pro (24H2). Was able to establish a WebDAV-Mount to my NC out of the box. It works almost as expected (unfortunately slower than with Linux).

Microsoft Learn reports also problems and solutions if WebDAV folder contains many files. No idea how many files your WebDAV-Folder contains. But maybe this could be a problem.

Out of curiosity, why don’t you want to use the Nextcloud Desktop client? It works well in my experience.

The Desktop Client sync files. This means all files are on Client PC and NC-Server.

If you not want to sync files, lets say you want to archive the photos from last hollydays in the Nextcloud but don’t want to have them on your Client PC as well, then WebDAV is the tool to do such.

That’s not true, you can set them as virtual files so they will stay on the server until you access them.

Correct - if it works…

As far as i know virtual files are only available on M$, not on Linux and Mac. See: How do virtual files work in the client

Hi,

If Windows shows “Can’t access Nextcloud WebDAV server,” it usually comes down to SSL or WebClient issues.
Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Make sure you’re using the full WebDAV path:
    https://yourdomain.com/remote.php/dav/files/yourusername/

  2. The SSL certificate on your Nextcloud must be valid and trusted by Windows.
If it’s self-signed, import it into Windows Trusted Root Certificates.

  3. Open Windows Services, find WebClient, and set it to Automatic (Delayed Start), then start it.
Without this service, WebDAV won’t work in File Explorer.

  4. Map the drive again using your full domain (not IP).
Use your Nextcloud username and an app password (create one under Profile → Security → App passwords).

  5. If you use a reverse proxy, confirm it passes the correct headers,
    Host, X-Forwarded-For, and X-Forwarded-Proto https.

After this setup, Windows should connect to your Nextcloud WebDAV without errors.
