Why this 300px empty space?

For what is this 300px empty space?

In v28 the menu (3 dots above) dont need this space anymore, because the manu opens in the best direction.
Is it obsolet?

I only get this empty space if I scroll down on the file list. If not, the whole space is used (NC 28.0.2, FF).
