Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 32.0.3
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian trixie
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Apache 2.4.65-2 amd64
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • N/A
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.4
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • Yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • Yesterday, 2025-12-31
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Archive
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Installed fresh Nextcloud server yesterday (2025-12-31). Did not install the Calendar, Contacts, Office, etc apps. Very basic installation, just file server essentially.

During the install a Contact named Leon Green was created (shown in the Activities app). His birthday seems to be 1st January, born in 2000.

I would like to remove Leon Green, but I did not install the Contacts app, so there is no obvious way of removing the entry.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Install a fresh Nextcloud server without the Contacts or Calendar apps.

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

There do not appear to be any relevant log entries.

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

An example contact that comes with Nextcloud. I’m not sure if it’s intentional that this appears in the activities even without the Contact app, but you can safely ignore it.

Thanks, mritzmann, but is there any way to remove it? (Eg so I don’t get Leon Green’s birthday reminders.)

Cheers,

Oh. I’ve only just realized that the Activity entry appeared because of the birthday. I wouldn’t have thought that could happen if the Contacts and Calendar app aren’t installed.

Sorry, I don’t know how to remove a contact without the Contacts app.

Which brings me to the question: why don’t you install the Contacts app, delete the contact, and then uninstall the Contacts app again? Seems to be the easiest.

Regardless of that, it might make sense to create a bug report for it. The “add example contact on first login” feature was introduced 10 months ago. Today is the birthday of the example contact. So this is the first time it’s been noticed.

I’m not aware of any way to remove that contact other than using the Contacts app either.

Unless you have just set up the instance, in which case I guess you could disable the feature, create another (admin) user, and then delete or disable your current user.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

@bb77 that reference in the Admin Manual looked promising, but the “Example content” section under Groupware of the Admin settings doesn’t appear on my instance. Probably because I didn’t install any of the Groupware apps.

I’ll give it a couple more days (just in case anybody else has any suggestions) and then I’ll try @mritzmann ‘s suggestion.

Cheers,
