Support intro
Sorry to hear you’re facing problems.
The community help forum (help.nextcloud.com) is for home and non-enterprise users. Support is provided by other community members on a best effort / “as available” basis. All of those responding are volunteering their time to help you.
If you’re using Nextcloud in a business/critical setting, paid and SLA-based support services can be accessed via portal.nextcloud.com where Nextcloud engineers can help ensure your business keeps running smoothly.
Getting help
In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.
Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:
- Official documentation (searchable and regularly updated)
- How to topics and FAQs
- Forum search
(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).
Hello everyone. Since a few weeks, I am unable to update any application. Whenever I press the “update button” or try the update apps command via cli, It tells me “Can’t update”
- Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
31.0.9
- Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
Debian Trixie (webserver); ArchLinux (Webproxy)
- Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
Apache 2.4.65-2
- Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
nginx 1.28.0-4
- PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
8.3
- Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
Yes
- When did this problem seem to first start?
4 to 6 Weeks ago
- Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
Initially installed via Archive (was an owncloud instance once and was migrated from owncloud 3 or 4. Can't really remember. It's OLD
- Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
Not really. However it's a proxmox VM behind a nginx proxy behind opnsense
Summary of the issue you are facing:
Whenever I try to hit “update Apps” I get told “Can’t update”. I tried investigate it, but had to stop when trying to curl the nectcloud appstore and fot an 403 - permission denied…
Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):
-
Logging in to my administrative WebUI, getting Notified there are “Updates available”
-
Pressing the “Update All Button”
-
“There was an error while updating, Can’t continue, App can’t be updated” - Also hapens when pressing “update” on a single app.
When trying the CLI version (sudo -u www-data php8.3 --define apc.enable_cli=1 /var/www/sites/nextcloud/occ app:update --all) I get tons of errors which summarize as:
XXX new version available: X.Y.Z
XXX couldn’t be updated

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response
- Use the
preformatted text
formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output. - If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
- If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
- Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.
Things I shoud add:
https://nc.jhml.de reaches the webproxy. The nginx proxy also does the SSL encryption via letsencrypt. The certificate gets copied to the webserver every time the certificate is renewed, and the webserver is also reloaded.
The webserver has the letsencrtypt certificate installed and nginx requests the SSL Version. from apache. There is no unencrypted traffic.
This is the apache config:
