Unable to delete preinstalled files as admin

I just installed a brand new OOTB Nextcloud instance on docker W11 with mariaDB. I was able to delete all of the preinstalled files except one called Photo book.odt. It says ““Delete file” action failed” when I try and delete that last file or the templates folder. I also tried deleting the file using the rm -f command in Powershell. Seeing that I’m logged in as ADMIN, why can’t I delete this file?

I also tried: su -s /bin/bash www-data -c ‘php occ files:cleanup’
0 orphaned file cache entries deleted
0 orphaned mount entries deleted

Please share a bit more about your Docker volumes setup.

I assume the “Delete file” action failed message was from the Web UI in Nextcloud? What does the log file say (nextcloud.log)? It may have more clues.

And what happened? Do note it has a space so you’ll have to quote the name or escape the space.

You’re running in Windows there are additional layers of complication. Though I don’t know why you’d have a problem with only a single file.

I typed rm -f “photo book.odt” and it did not work even though the command was accepted, literally nothing happened. I see nothing in the logs and I did put the command in quotes. I am not allowed to upload attachments as a new user. Here is the exported log:

Maybe I should not use Nextcloud if I can’t even delete a file. I have spent 20 hours trying to figure out why. Not worth. I hate Nextcloud!

I’m fairly confident whatever you’re experiencing is due to the Docker Desktop (I presume) on Windows setup. I don’t think it’s even a Nextcloud issue.

For example, if you can’t even delete the file at the command line it can’t be a Nextcloud issue.

Can you share more details about your setup?

Are you using WSL or Hyper-V?

What installation method and image are you using? What installation instructions did you follow? etc.

When you create a post in the Support category there is a support template that has information in it that we need to help you, but you seem to have overlooked that.

I can delete all files except for that one.

The setup is a W11 desktop running Docker using WSL and mariadb. I did the following:

  1. Enabled WSL 2:

    • Ran wsl --install and wsl --set-default-version 2 in PowerShell.
    • Rebooted the computer.

  2. Installed Docker Desktop:

    • Downloaded and installed Docker Desktop from the official Docker website.
    • Ensured the “Install required Windows components for WSL 2” option was checked.
    • Completed the initial setup and verified Docker installation with docker --version.

  3. Set up Nextcloud and MariaDB Containers:

    • Pulled Nextcloud and MariaDB images using docker pull nextcloud and docker pull mariadb.
    • Created a Docker network with docker network create nextcloud-net.
    • Started the MariaDB container:
      docker run -d --name nextcloud-db --network nextcloud-net -e MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=your-root-password -e MYSQL_DATABASE=nextcloud -e MYSQL_USER=nextcloud -e MYSQL_PASSWORD=your-password mariadb
    • Started the Nextcloud container:
      docker run -d --name nextcloud --network nextcloud-net -p 8080:80 -v nextcloud-data:/var/www/html nextcloud
    • Accessed Nextcloud via http://localhost:8080 and completed the setup using the database details provided above.

While I appreciate you calling me out for purposely overlooking the support template, my issue still persists.

My best guess is a case sensitivity situation. I don’t recall all the details of Docker on Windows, but I do know there are differences in how case sensitivity is handled with WSL2. And that it also varies depending on whether the mounting is done at the WSL2 level or not.

I assume the above is what you literally typed, correct? You didn’t specify a bind mount (a path) instead of nextcloud-data, correct?

Are you running the docker run from your Windows prompt or from within WSL2?

I appreciate that but it wasn’t the issue. I deleted my entire Nextcloud environment and recreated it. I don’t think I installed a separate Linux distro the first time. I was able to delete all files and folders this time except for “Talk,” until I disabled the app. I think the issue had something to do with installing Nextcloud directly to Docker rather than the separate Linux distro that must be created separately to work properly.
