Sorry to hear you’re facing problems.
The community help forum (help.nextcloud.com) is for home and non-enterprise users. Support is provided by other community members on a best effort / “as available” basis. All of those responding are volunteering their time to help you.
If you’re using Nextcloud in a business/critical setting, paid and SLA-based support services can be accessed via portal.nextcloud.com where Nextcloud engineers can help ensure your business keeps running smoothly.
Getting help
In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.
Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:
- Official documentation (searchable and regularly updated)
- How to topics and FAQs
- Forum search
(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).
Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.
The Basics

- Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
no
Summary of the issue you are facing:
Since several major versions I’m unable to edit text- and MD files within the webbrowser.
Instead, files are directly being downloaded.
I kinda shrugged it of, as there has been deprecations, incompatibilities and other changes with text-apps allowing for editing within the browser.
However now I installed the apps Nextcloud Office and Collabora Online - Built-in CODE Server - and face the same problem.
While the apps in general seem to work (setup and connection to the collabora server successful, I also can create new respective Office-documents (Diagram, Document, Presentation, Spreadsheet), I can’t edit them. They’re as well instantly being downloaded when clicked on.
That leads to me thinking it’s not a text-file/-app problem, but a more generic one.
I found tons of posts describing a similar issue, however setups and/or solutions did not fit my situation.
Please mind, the whole setup was initially set up around 10 years, with lot’s of migrations happened in between, initially leading to the current state of nextcloud on Debian/bookworm with standard packages (nginx, php, etc.) and Nextcloud 31.0.5 - at least for the last couple of years always updated via occ
.
Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):
Clicking on whatever document which should open an app specific editor, such as plain text files or office documents.
I’m happy to provide whatever config / logs might be helpful, but don’t want to clutter right from the beginning.
I’m unable to tell if e.g. my nginx config might be responsible and would be worth pasted. Same for PHP config - or dir-/file-permissions.
