Does the newest version of Talk require SSL certificate? My setup home lab using the Talk app between my wife and I (Nextcloud setup working fine) no longer worked after the last update.
It appears the normal http IP and port number is no longer accepted during setup.
Good evening. I was not trying to skip the template, but I was out of town and posted that question from my phone. I also didn’t think a “yes or no answer” to a question would require that detailed listing of information. If certificates are now required, a yes answer would tell me I need to find a simpler means to create them. A no answer means the problem is on my end.
Yes the issue is with the Android devices. Are you saying a new version is coming out to fix that issue that the last update created.
Self-hosted local network, no VPN. The Nextcloud is hosted on a dedicated UnRaid box. Currently both my Windows systems can connect to it with Talk with no issues. (Although, I see an update is available for Talk which might break it as it appears it did with my Android phone and tablet).
Lots of videos and stuff on how to create self-generated SSL certificates. I’ve not had much luck and frankly for a strictly home-network with no outside exposure, not sure why there is such a requirement. Seems a simple method would be available to enable it to work without SSL certificates depending on the one’s environment. If this option isn’t available, I can only think it is because there is the belief individuals are not smart enough to know the difference. (UnRaid has this option).
Current android versions accidentially blocked http access, but that should be fixed in an upcoming version.
Generally SSL/TLS is always recommended, it is even required, if you plan to use the video functionality, as browsers are not allowing camera access without SSL/TLS.
In addition: Apple and Google are more and more restrictive with updates of the mobile OS by blocking http connections. So it becomes more tricky to bypass these restrictions.
You should not work with self sigend certificates, because a Letsencrypt certificate is free for anybody and more secure. As “special effect” apps can access easier to servers, because of valid SSL certificates.
Thank you, all this helps a lot. I was trying to avoid having to go “the get domain name, etc” which Letsencrpyt would need. Just have no need for exposure outside of my own home network for what I do.
I was able to download the apk of Talk 22.0.0 RC1 and it now working. I confirmed the version on Google Play still does not. So for now if the solution is to stay on this version, that is what I plan to do.
