Replacement for PHP7 IMAP extension (required by user_external)

Hi all,

as the PHP7 IMAP extension is dropped by package maintainers in OpenSUSE at least¹, I wondered what’s the official way to enable IMAP user authentication as of now.
Do I have to build the extension manually or is there another way I didn’t found so far?
