TLDR: Does anyone have any open source options that achieve real time sync on android using file watchers instead of periodic checks? Basically Syncthing’s sync method but with Nextcloud.
I’m trying to migrate from Syncthing to Nextcloud for syncing my obsidian vault.
Setup has been pretty easy, but I have noticed that unlike Syncthing, the Nextcloud android app does not seem to support real time sync with something like inotify, instead opting to sync every 15 or so minutes.
For me, real time sync is important since I hop between devices enough that such a long wait time between syncs could cause merge conflicts which is one of the problems I am trying to solve with Nextcloud.
I know that you can change the sync interval to be less than 15 minutes in a config file but that just makes the problem less bad instead of fixing it and I don’t want to push my battery too hard.
So far after a few Google searches, the closest solution I have seen is an app Called FolderSync, but its paid and not open source which, for me, is a tough pill to swallow.
Does anyone have any open source options that achieve realtime sync on android.
And, as you said yourself, there is probably no perfect solution. By the way, isn’t it still problematic, even with real-time sync via Syncthing, when Obsidian is used or open on multiple devices at the same time?
Either way, considering that you’ve already Googled and tested it, I get the feeling that probably nobody here will be able to provide you with a magic bullet to completely eliminate the trade-offs you mentioned yourself. Also, since your Syncthing solution seems to work for you, I would suggest that, to avoid sync conflicts in Obsidian, you stick with Syncthing for that use case, and use Nextcloud for the rest, i.e., normal files and documents, calendar, contacts, etc.
These are just my two cents, but maybe others here who actually use Obsidian with Nextcloud have a few more ideas.
