This has been a long standing issue (for years now!) and as I need it as well I would be happy to try and get things moving. I am a developer but definitely not fluent in PHP so the only relevant thing I can do is to see if I could actually for once get open source to be properly financed - since many people (including me) seem happy to pay for this, and that spare time is clearly not enough here.
I will try to contact everyone who has expressed an interest in this. If the quote seems reasonable and the contribution estimates are close enough to it I could for instance set up a clean and open budget on https://opencollective.com/opensource (or maybe https://opencollective.com/europe depending on where the contributions would come from).
But I think it would be a good idea first to get at least some approval from the maintainer so @mdw what do you think? As I know that developing is one thing, but obviously maintaining is another kind of task…
we are also looking for a way to share passwords in the Passwords app with Nextcloud Contact Circles/Teams, in addition to LDAP groups and regular contacts.
Currently, it seems that sharing is only possible with individual contacts. Has there been any update on this feature?
Hi Gama, i just red your post about your interest in sharing passwords with contacts and teams. We are currently also looking for an solution on this end, were you able to bring the ball to rolling? We are also interested in any kind of solution for this topic. We could also see us supporting the dev financially if that would help.
I would love to hear back from you!
Suggestion: Consider Bitwarden (Vaultwarden) as a Group Password-Sharing Alternative
Recently, @szaimen announced that Nextcloud AIO now allows the deployment of additional Docker containers for selected applications such as Plex, Jellyfin, and notably, also Bitwarden.
I haven’t had the chance to test this integration yet, so I’m not sure how exactly Bitwarden is connected to Nextcloud — whether it shares user accounts, data, or if it’s entirely standalone. But that’s not the main point right now.
The important thing is that I’ve been using Bitwarden (specifically Vaultwarden) as a self-hosted password manager for years, and from my perspective, it is the most complete and reliable solution currently available in this space.
One of the key features I actively use is:
The ability to share passwords across multiple users via organizations (group-based sharing)
This is exactly the kind of functionality that is currently missing from the Nextcloud Passwords app, despite significant community demand. I understand that implementing such a feature is complex, but given that Bitwarden is now deployable directly through AIO, I believe it’s worth considering:
Bitwarden as a practical solution for group/team password sharing
Exploring how the Bitwarden container is configured in AIO and how well it fits into the broader Nextcloud ecosystem
If anyone here has already tested this Bitwarden container in AIO, it would be really helpful to hear a few insights — for example:
Vaultwarden’s data will be automatically included in AIO’s backup solution, and I’d assume that the community containers can also be updated via the AIO interface.
Hi and thanks for this answer on a very slowly moving topic!
I was not really able to “bring the ball to rolling”, here is what we got so far:
I found an experienced developer I trust
We have a detailed development plan, with a quote
We are in contact with a large Nextcloud community (500-1000 deployed instances) that would be willing to experiment
And that’s it for now. We submitted a proposal to NL Net for funding but were rejected.
Of course we are looking for alternative ways to fund this but so far the few answers I have had were not enough considering the effort it required (in the 10k€-20k€ range).
I still think we could find out “something” but could not find the time to do the necessary research.
Regarding alternatives such as Bit/VaultWarden I am definitely aware of these but the need here is quite different: the target users would be highly non-technical and Nextcloud integration is a must, not optional.
Dear Gama, thanks for letting me know the current state. My managing director has asked me to create a fundraising post in the forum. You have already made significant progress in this area, could you explain the problem of funding to me? We would like to look for a group of NC users who are willing to invest small amounts of money themselves in order to promote the OpenSource software, rather than having the whole thing fundraised. We ourselves are of course also willing to do our part and are very interested in improving the app in the near future. Can you give some insight into the development plan?
Thanks in advance and we hope to get something going here
