OnlyOffice does not open ODT and ODS files for editing (Nextcloud AIO v11.4.0)

Hi everyone,

Today I updated my Nextcloud AIO instance to version 11.4.0, which includes Nextcloud 31.0.7.
I’ve been using Nextcloud Office (Collabora Online) for a long time to edit documents online, and it has always worked reliably — including support for .docx, .xlsx, .odt, and .ods formats.

I decided to try something new, so I disabled the Nextcloud Office app and enabled OnlyOffice instead, to see how it performs as an online editor.

During my testing, I encountered the following behavior:

  • .docx and .xlsx files open and edit online without any issues in OnlyOffice.
  • However, .odt and .ods files do not open in OnlyOffice — instead, they are offered as downloads.

With Nextcloud Office, all of the above formats opened in the browser and were editable without any problems.

My questions:

  • Is this the expected behavior for OnlyOffice?
  • Does OnlyOffice officially support .odt and .ods formats for editing?
  • Is there any way to enable editing for these file types in OnlyOffice?
  • Or would it be more appropriate in my case to continue using Nextcloud Office?

:puzzle_piece: Additional info:

  • I’m using the official Nextcloud AIO setup
  • App switching was done via the Nextcloud AIO GUI
  • No manual changes were made to the Docker containers or internal config files

I’d appreciate any insights or tips on how to get all major office formats working in one online editor.

Hi, have you checked the onlyoffice admin settings?

You’re absolutely right — that was the missing piece.

Simply enabling the OnlyOffice app wasn’t enough in this case — as you pointed out, it also requires additional configuration in the admin settings menu.

I’m attaching a screenshot of the required setup, in case someone else runs into the same issue.

Appreciate your concise but effective reply — straight to the point, just the way I like it.
