Nomadic Identity / Radical Idea for Federated Apps - Add app via remote credentials, rather than install locally

What?
I’d like to add remote apps to my instance.

Why?
I administer multiple instances with hosted apps (Bookmarks, Tasks, Calendars) that I’d like accessible within my localhost only instance.

Instead of regular installation, I can just add my remote account url, user name and password credentials in the appstore for the specific app. Passwords could easily be generated as one time. Header displayed will still be that of my local instance. Has this been discussed?

Right now I’m mounting the external instance app as a url within External Sites app as explained in CustomCSS Issue #5. Then I’m adding the relevant icon manually as described in External Sites App Issue #81, but this is just a hack as shown in Server Issue #8413

Thoughts?

I’d find this feature especially helpful for apps such as:

  • Bookmarks
  • Deck
  • Calendar
  • Contacts
  • Tasks
  • Talk

Edit: This concept could also be a way to mirror an app locally, allowing you to share all the app data between the Hosted Instance of Bookmarks and a Local Host instance in case the hosted app goes offline.

Server issue has submitted for this here as issue #8643.. Please take a look and share your thoughts!

I just found Hubzilla’s Nomadic Identity, which allows users to clone and mirror their account to other trusted federated instances… or even migrate to another server entirely.
