Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

I use my nextcloud to store my keepassX Database. A week ago it got corrupted and I needed to jump back to an older version, but in Nextcloud under Versions there was no previous version, so I had to use my backup to get a working copy. Also thereafter it kept only very few versions:

The file is existing since many years and updated often, so I expected at least about a version per month as described in Version control — Nextcloud latest User Manual latest documentation . For other files this seems to work:

The App versions is activated. The user has a quota of 100 GB and is using about 25 GB. So, far less then 50%.

Can anybody give me a hint what is going wrong?

Versions App 1.24.0 is installed in my nextcloud instance.

Do you mean KeePassXC? Might be this setting since in effect it would create a new file each time rather than update the existing file (by default): KeePassXC: Advanced Save Options.

KeePassXC under Linux and Keepass2Android on my Tablet. I would like to be able to go back also to older versions and therefore I would like to use the versions in Nextcloud. I would also like to understand why this is not working as described in the documentation…

I am using the original KeePass client, but I was facing an identical issue: I was unable to recover an old version of my KeePass file when I needed one…

Thanks for the hint KeePassXC is creating a new (temporary named) file on save, then remove the old file and rename the newly created file with its temporary name to the name of your kdbx file. It looks like the original KeePass program is doing something quite similar.

So the old version of the file is removed instead of being modified. In the user interface I was unable to find it, so I started looking on the filesystem of my server.

Under the Nextcloud data directory I looked for the users folder and opened files_trashbin (instead of files_versions) and found a directory which contained a lot of backups (which saved my day!)

The directory where I did find my old kdbx file: data//files_trashbin/versions
