No sharing options in NC Mac app anymore

NC app 33.0.5, Tahoe 26.5.1. No sharing options, no Finder integration. Restarted, no dice. No change on my part whatsoever.

Any tips? Thanks!

Assuming you are using the classic synchronization folders, please note this known issue:

This is a known problem and we have not figured out yet how far we can influence macOS to behave as desired and load the FinderSync extension which conflicts with the file provider extension (a problem handed to us by Apple which considers file providers the designated successors to those legacy extensions and does not allow both running simultaneously while macOS has the sole power of choosing what is loaded).

that URL doesn’t exist. Thanks for the answer, but I don’t know what it actually means - does this mean Finder integration is not present at the moment? Because in my case, it isn’t. No trace of it.

I am sorry, we had to restructure that part a bit to reflect the correct terminology, hence the link broke. I updated the URL in my previous post. :slightly_smiling_face:

In summary it means: It is not possible to have the classic sync folder integration and a file provider set up at once. The latter will always be preferred by macOS.

I am currently working on improvements in the user interface and experience which makes this more obvious and explicit. They will make it into 34.0.0. Also, I am working on FinderSync loading improvements which should ship equally. Hopefully we can nudge macOS into a more reliable extension loading behavior but ultimately it is not under our control.

A quick question to this one: does it mean that if I disable the “file provider” extension I shall get the good old Finder integration back?

I installed today the v34 update and suddenly i have no sharing and context menu anymore. So Nextcloud desktop app is almost useless for me.

I didnt change anything.. just updated. I tried disabling/enabling the file provider extension - it makes no difference.

Or in other words, what do i have to do to get the sharing options back?

Since v33 the finder integration regularly disappeared so i had to restart nextcloud-app or the finder.

With v32 everything was perfect. Why the change?

@verstaerkermusic Thank you for the feedback.

With v32 everything was perfect.

Please note that there never was a version 32. Do you mean the major version 4? Things were quite different back then. We did have two different client builds. One with and one without file provider extension, hence the latter worked out fine more often (but not always) with the FinderSync extension.

Why the change?

This change is a step further to improve the reliability with the irreconcilable conflict of FinderSync and file provider extensions. For many users and customers, it did not work reliably already. This morning, I also commented on this matter on a GitHub issue about this change more in depth. We do what we can but some factors are beyond our control (macOS app sandbox, other third-party extensions breaking ours).

suddenly i have no sharing and context menu anymore.

Do you use the classic folder synchronization or a file provider? This is always the single most important question when these context menu actions are missing. I assume the former.

just updated.

From which version?

I updated from version 33.x (i cannot tell wich one it was exactly without checking the backups)

Fileprovider is off.

Yes it wasn’t version 32 . V4 it was. That one was running great.

For reference, I created a meta issue for the whole everlasting reliability topic around the FinderSync extension. Best follow there, because this still is the community forum.

FWIW - I turned off the “file provider” extension and no, no Nextcloud ↔ Finder functionality returned.

@silverdr Please see GitHub for the current status of this matter.
