Nginx "upstream" directive not allowed here after updating

So, I have a docker-compose set up with NC-fpm/mariadb/radis/nginx reverse-proxy/letsencrypt.
When 19.0.6 came out, it borked my system, so I’d rolled back to 19.0.5 and pinned that.

Last night after work I decided to get it at least on the latest patch, and upgrade to a new version next week.

I dumped the DB, stopped all the containers, snapshot the configs and volumes, modified Nextcloud/app/Dockerfile from 19.0.5-fpm to 19.0-fpm, docker-compose build --pull ; docker-compose up -d.

When everything came online, the NC webserver stays rebooting. The log reads:

nginx: [emerg] “upstream” directive is not allowed here in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:1

Here is the nginx.conf

I’ve tried wrapping everything in http { }, and have gone as far as commenting out the first block entirely, but it still claims that the first row has an invalid upstream.

So I’d just realized that changes to nginx.conf don’t exist until I rebuild the container.

Replaced the config with base from examples, added my server_name, and 19.0.12 is functional.

Here’s hoping upgrading to new major versions will be smooth.

Hi, Im struggling with the same problem, what do you mean by “Replaced the config with base from examples”?

Where do I find the examples? Ive tried this official guide, but it still does not work
