Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • v.1.55.3
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Raspberry OS Bookworm
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • unsure
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • none yet
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • unsure
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • No
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • following installation
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • RPi 5 latest release image download
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I am able to access NextCloud itself locally (remote access not yet set up), however while I can get the NextCloudPi Panel (https://nextcloudpi.local:4443/) to come up and log in, after that it just whirls on a page titled “System Info”. None of the top menu items, or the left hand menu items (the Backups folder header shows with a bunch of backup items listed) are responsive. So far over two days I have tried 6 or 8 times, have rebooted the Pi several times. This latest try the screen has been whirling for about 90 minutes, its not going anywhere.

I am unable to SSH into the Pi. With the Pi hooked into a monitor I can see it load, then it asks me for the NextCloudPi login. If I login there with my ncp login and password from the activation I get a pretty graphic and then it asks me again to login. Thus I have no useful terminal access.

NextCloud itself seems to be fine and I can sync files from my Windows 11 desktop to Nextcloud just fine.

So my question is, am I just dead in the water and should try again to reflash the micro SD? Should I try an earlier release? I could not find this issue addressed elsewhere.
[…]

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. rebooted the Pi, same thing
  2. Accessed with Chrome and with Edge multiple times, same thing

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

Unable to access the logs from the Admin panel - Panel in non-responsive

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

PASTE

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

We need more beef (error messages, logs…).
As a new setup it is so badly performing, I would start from scratch and avoid booting from sdcard, Write image with rpi-imager, no presets, to nvme/usb device you are booting from.
Webbrowser must use javascript, good luck.

but you have acces to the logs on commandline? then you can post the logs.
e.g. <path to nc>\data\nextcloud.log

FOLLOWUP:

have reflashed the RPi image several times. I usually got farther before the system locked up, but changing the admin user password really seemed to kill it, so finally I didn’t do that. Thought I had things running OK, but after I shut down and rebooted the Pi so as to move it to a ore permanent location, I am now unable to access NextCloud - “Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.”
I don’t know where to look for the server logs, or how to interpret them, so I’m thinking this just requires more expertise than I have. It certainly doesn’t seem stable enough to entrust all of my file to. Guess I’ll have to stick to Dropbox for another year.
Thank for the initial suggestions.

Sure. it’s your choice, but I would prefer a fresh nextcloudpi setup instead of another year with Dropbox

I hear you, however it seems I may not have the skill level needed to maintain it and to deal with the various issues which seem to arise at this point. Whether it is my setup or the software I am not in a position to say, or to solve.

I thank you for taking the time and interest to weigh in and respond to me.

The Chinese are right, every journey begins with the first step. You are not in a hurry, are you? So stay with your dropbox and take the sd card(s) and set up test-server, That is so nice to work with a pi, most time consuming is downloading and writing an image - ready for take off again.
exp: you may start with an older image (say: 1.52.x) and than do all updates possible on cli / ncp-config or webui :4443.
exp: install configure delete apps as much as you want
exp. learn how to backup and restore
Do it on your pace, with reading docs and here in the forum.
Do it on your pace, you will quickly expand your skills in much more spheres than ncp but even there.
Be asured it is not wasted time that sbcs and homelab software and their communities has to offer.
