Nextcloud + Synology + OpenVPN - Access and sharing

Nextcloud version : Nextcloud Hub 8 (29.0.0)
Operating system and version : DSM 7
Apache or nginx version : Apache 2.4

Hello everyone,
I have installed Nextcloud on my Synology DS218Play. My aim is to use it as a cloud to synchronise my NAS with all my other devices (computers, phones, etc) through Nextcloud.

My access to Synology is via OpenVPN.

I’m wondering about access security and possibilities in this configuration:

  • Access to Nextcloud: since access is via the NAS IP or DNS address, if my synology is secured by OpenVPN, it seems obvious to me that Nextcloud can only be accessed via the VPN. Is this really the case?
  • If so, is it still possible to share files with external users? Sending download links, using phone tools, etc? If so, how?
  • Which ports must be open to access nextcloud tools without compromising the security of my Synology?
  • Finally, to synchronise my NAS with Nextcloud, should I use WebDav?

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Thank you very much,

Nals

You need access from internet, port forwarding on router and e.g. Lets Encrypt certificate.

Hi Devnull,
Many thanks for the reply.

How do I ensure access from internet? You mean on Nextcloud parameter?
Regarding port forwarding, can you let me know which one specifically?
My connexions are secured by Lets Encrypte certificate from Synology. That is ok
Many thanks,
Kind regards,
Nals
