I’m currently using Nextcloud Desktop 3.15.1 on Windows 11, and the performance is extremely slow, making it nearly unusable. For example, opening a small text file (just a few bytes) takes 28 seconds, and opening a small JPG image takes about the same amount of time.
However, opening files on my local drive is quick, as expected.
I have a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet connection to the Nextcloud server, so there are no signs of network performance issues. When browsing the web GUI or using the Nextcloud app on my iPhone, the performance is as expected.
There are no files in the sync queue.
Only the Windows default firewall is enabled.
I am using the default settings in the Nextcloud Desktop app.
Are you using virtual files and clicking on not yet downloaded files?
If you are not using virtual files or have the file downloaded, the issue is probably with Windows, since this has nothing to do with NC and should behave 100% the same as opening a local file.
If you are using virtual files and it takes 28s to open a file, there is something very off with your Windows PC or your Nextcloud Server.
28 seconds is the time it takes when the files are virtual and downloading (essentially the same issue). However, when using the OneDrive folder, I don’t experience the same problem.
I’m experiencing the same issue. When uploading through the web UI, I’m getting speeds of over 600 Mbps. With ShareX to the server, it’s over 800 Mbps. However, when using the Nextcloud Windows desktop app, the upload speed doesn’t even reach 1 Mbps.
The home network here is 10G fiber from AT&T, and I have no trouble uploading to OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar services. This clearly isn’t a localized issue, unless Windows is somehow rate-limiting the connection. It’s also not server-side, as demonstrated by the other tests I mentioned, which all performed as expected.
And with the 28s delay, perhaps you manage to check what the client is doing during this time. If it is waiting on something for example. You can also check on the server, when you open a file, is there directly a log in the server logs that requests the file.
With the logs, you would know which part might be slowing the process down. There are quite a few options.
I have a similar experience: When uploading a folder with lots of other folders and files inside, the upload speed is exactely 1 Mbit. If I only place some few files and folders in the sync folder, the upload speed is 40-100 Mbit.
So the issue depends on how many files and folders have to be transmitted. Don’t know, what’s going on.
I also experience a slow change to “green” symbol of synced folders. Seems as the server needs lots of time to save the folder and sync this back (on many files and folders).
When using the Navigation Pane to browse folders on NextCloud, the performance is fast as expected.
However, when using the Content Pane (File View), the experience is slow, with approximately a 30-second delay when changing folders or performing actions such as opening, renaming, or deleting a file.
