Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 31.0.7

    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Since upgrading to nextcloud-desktop 3.17.0, my system logs are flooded with the following message blocks, which repeat every 5 seconds regardless of whether anyone is logged in or not.

Aug 15 07:34:25 office systemd[2455]: com.nextcloud.desktopclient.nextcloud.service: Scheduled restart job, restart counter is at 6438.
Aug 15 07:34:25 office systemd[2455]: Started com.nextcloud.desktopclient.nextcloud.service - Nextcloud desktop user service.
Aug 15 07:34:25 office nextcloud[138684]: qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display
Aug 15 07:34:25 office nextcloud[138684]: qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
Aug 15 07:34:25 office nextcloud[138684]: This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Aug 15 07:34:25 office nextcloud[138684]: Available platform plugins are: wayland, minimalegl, xcb, eglfs, vkkhrdisplay, linuxfb, vnc, minimal, wayland-egl, offscreen.

Note the restart counter at 6438! It loops continuously. I have temporarily stopped the flood of log traffic by executing the following command and rebooting:

systemctl --global disable com.nextcloud.desktopclient.nextcloud.service

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Apparently, just upgrade to nextcloud-desktop 3.17.0. Presumably, a fresh install would also do this. I’m sure there must be something specific to my environment or this problem would already be well know, but I don’t know what that would be.

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

No log entries during this event, presumably because it only occurs on the client side.

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

No web browser involved when this occurs

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

No log entries during this event

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

I have no idea what is causing this problem, but just want to say that I have exactly the same problem. My syslog was also being flooded with messages identical to the ones you report. It was fine until a few days ago, so I assume that the problem is also the update to the most recent version.

This is happening on a headless Ubuntu server, version 24.04, being used as a Nextcloud client machine. Since it’s a headless server, I am not, as far as I am aware, running the desktop client: instead I run the sync from time to time via a systemd script using the nextcloudcmd command, installed as recommended here.

Since the logs are talking about QT libraries I wonder if the messages are something to do with the desktop client trying to run and failing because there is no GUI?

Anyway, thanks for the tip about disabling the service. That seems to have worked for me.

Thank you for confirming that it’s not just me. That’s actually quite valuable information.

The odd thing is that as far as I can tell, the nextcloud-desktop client that runs when I do log in seems to continue to operate normally. If I change a local copy of something that nextcloud-desktop is keeping in sync, the changes appear on the server quickly. Changes on the server arrive in my local copy in a reasonable time. So I don’t know what that service I disabled does, but it doesn’t appear to be impacting me as far as I can tell.

I see this is your first post, @AdamJacobs. Welcome to the forum.
