I have a Virtualbox with 40GB of virtual Disk where the Ubuntu OS runs.
My next cloud data was initially on this drive and later I added an external NTFS USB 3.0 drive. (6TB capacity)
Then I changed the nextcloud data to /media/usb/nextcloud-data and gave proper permissions and pointed data directory to /media/usb/nextcloud-data on /var/www/nextcloud/config/config.php.
In spite, my mobile app shows 39GB of maximum storage.
I am not sure if the data directory pointed to the new location or still pointing to old location.
