Nextcloud AIO fast after starting, but quickly gets very slow

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I’ve first setup my Nextcloud with step-ca and a local domain (nextcloud.xxx.internal). This was working, mostly. It was relatively snappy, but e.g. hardware acceleration wasn’t working, I couldn’t get Memories Transcoder to work. I understood from searching online that this could be because the different containers couldn’t communicate with each other, because they want a public certificate or so.

I also couldn’t get calDAV working before, i.e. getting NC calendar to show up in my FOSS Calendar phone app.

I did the all-in-one/reverse-proxy.md at main · nextcloud/all-in-one · GitHub guide to set NC up with a public domain. The Memories HW acceleration worked now! The rest seemed to work just fine, too, including the calDAV stuff.

Went to bed, woke up to a terribly slow NC instance. I tried connecting with my phone Quillpad App to the server (it uses NC Notes), and it’d say invalid credentials.. but most likely it just got timed out. Browsing from page to page is really slow, and the CPU usage in NC says it’s at somewhere between 400% and 800%, often.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

Think you’ve fixed a bunch of stuff (NC from local step-ca setup to letsencrypt public domain; memories HW accel; calDAV integration setup)
Server still runs smoothly (after just restarting)
Server runs very slow with timeouts (relatively soon after restarting, say from 30min later on)

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
- If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

What about on your underlying host? If I’m understanding your description, it’s not clear if Nextcloud is the culprit or merely collateral damage.

Check what’s going on on the underlying host.

I even if I stopped most of my other containers besides traefik and nextcloud, this is what the typical top looks like (here with a spike from jellyfin I suppose):

It’s fine if it’s indeed Memories, I just wish I could throttle it a bit so the rest would continue working fine..

This really makes me think there’s something with memories, but no idea

I’m almost starting to think that this is a server that’s trying to do more than it can. I have a N150 and 16GB of RAM, so I feel it shouldn’t.. which makes me think that if I’m right, there’s either no mitigation for e.g. Memories wanting to do a lot, or I’ve misconfigured something within Nextcloud (though almost everything, I think, is still default)…

Or maybe this helps more! All my apps loads slowly now, while I run all apps on an SSD, I only have multimedia on HDDs..
