Summary of the issue you are facing:

Collabora Online fails to load documents inside Nextcloud with the error:

“Document loading failed – Failed to establish socket connection or socket connection closed unexpectedly. The reverse proxy might be misconfigured.”

Nextcloud UI, file uploads, and general functionality work correctly.
The issue only affects Collabora document editing (ODT, DOCX, etc.).

This is a local-only setup using:

  • local DNS (nextcloud.homeserver.lan)

  • self-signed TLS

  • Apache reverse proxy

  • no public domain and no Let’s Encrypt

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!)

Install Nextcloud AIO from scratch using the official ghcr.io/nextcloud-releases/all-in-one:latest image.

  1. Configure local DNS so nextcloud.homeserver.lan resolves to a private LAN IP.
  2. Access Nextcloud only via https://nextcloud.homeserver.lan through an Apache reverse proxy (Docker).
  3. Enable Collabora Online from the AIO interface.
  4. Log in to Nextcloud.
  5. click any .odt file. or create a new .odt file
  6. Click to open the document. and its failed

  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
