Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 34.0.1snap1
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Debian 13.6 (trixie)
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Whatever is in the snap
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • n/a
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • Whatever is in the snap
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • in the last several days.
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • snap, bare metal
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No.

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I’ve tried installing afresh twice now, using the aforementioned tarball and the current snap. In both cases, the installation gets as far as preparing the apps menu, and I get the message, “Recommended apps\nCould not fetch list of apps from the App Store.”

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Install anew.

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

There are no logs in `/snap/nextcloud/current/logs`. And I do not have access to the logs in the manner suggested above.

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

N/A

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

No logs in /snap/nextcloud/current/var/log

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

Doesn’t exist (yet).

Apps

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

Addendum. While searching on the net I came across advice to try https://apps.nextcloud.com/api/v1 in my browser. It failed in both vivaldi (based on chromium) and Firefox with the message “Page not found\nThe page you are looking for does not exist!”.

Which makes sense, that does not exist.
Your error will be fixed in the next maintenance release

Thank you.

Apparently it’s more than just the initial installation. I hacked the URL to get past that (to http://hawk.local/), and went to the Featured Apps page. I then selected Calendar, and clicked on the install icon. I provided my password. The system spun its wheels briefly, and changed the download icon to a stylized X icon. I conjecture that means that it could not find the Calendar app. That makes sense if the URL for the app store is common to both the installation code and the Featured Apps page. If so, the installed instance of Nextcloud is pretty hamstrung.

@ccurley this is a known issue and will be resolved in vs 34.0.2:

update: nextcloud-34.0.0.tar.bz2 also failed with the same error. nextcloud-33.0.6.tar.bz2 got past that error. On to the next adventure!

@ccurley that adventure will continue until the bug is resolved as @susnux mentioned in the last comment of the issue request below

using the snap, you could install the last stable candidate vs 33.0.6snap2

image

as described here; Release strategy · nextcloud-snap/nextcloud-snap Wiki and then upgrading to 34.0.1snap1 by changing back to the stable channel

image

by selecting the stable upgrade channel

but if you keep changing installation methods, no one will be able to keep track and you’re not helping yourself at all. this is an upstream bug and will stay an upstream bug regardless of the installation method until its resolved in vs. 34.0.2

if you follow the linked procedure, you can work around the issue using the snap installation, but you will need to follow the links and do some reading, keeping the adventure minimal

If I understand correctly, this is just a bug in a feature of the ‘First Run Wizard’ which installs a set of recommended apps that can also be installed individually from the App Store.

Yes, this should certainly be fixed, and it already has been. The fix is scheduled for the next minor release.

In the meantime, though, rather than reinstalling Nextcloud over and over again or waiting for the fix, why not just uncheck that box to skip that step in the wizard and then install the apps you need from the App Store afterwards?

This method may take slightly longer and be less convenient, but it will certainly be quicker than reinstalling Nextcloud repeatedly.

I don’t think so. I was able to get past the Wizard and long into a partially installed instance. I was unable to get anything from the app store there. So it may affect the installed Nextcloud.

I don’t recall seeing a box to uncheck.

As for the re-installations, my interest was to get a running instance of Nextcloud. I tried using the snap only because I had hit this problem with the tarball, and conjectured that I had done something wrong (I hadn’t). I don’t particularly want the snap installation, so I went back to the tarball for further experimentation.

Nor was I about to wait for the July 23 release of the fix. So I fell back to the 33.0.6 tarball and installed that. Due to other considerations I also was considering moving from sqlite3 to postgres. I now have that done as well. So now all appears to be working and backups from my prior instance of Nextcloud are restored.

Okay, then I’m not sure. I’ve never had any issues installing apps from the App Store, neither on my main instance nor on several test installations, all installed from the tarball, including fresh installations from the 34.0.0 tarball.

That said, I use my own script to deploy my test instances, in which I disable the First Run Wizard, so I haven’t seen either the web installer or the First Run Wizard in a long time. I also use MariaDB on my main production instance and on most of my test setups, occasionally PostgreSQL, but I’ve never used SQLite, so I can’t rule out that it might be related.

Either way, there doesn’t seem to be a general issue preventing apps from being installed on Nextcloud, apart from the specific case mentioned in the links that @scubamuc shared, which appears to affect only the First Run Wizard. So, again, I’m not sure what went wrong with your installations.

But I’m glad it seems to be working now. :slightly_smiling_face:
