NC34.0.5 App Store unavailable on libcurl builds without HTTP/2 support (possible relation to #58528 / #59662?)

Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 34.0.5
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Shared hosting (Lolipop! Japan)
    • OS not directly accessible
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • Apache (shared hosting, version unknown)
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • None / Unknown
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • PHP 8.4 CGI
    • Also tested on PHP 8.3 module mode
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • Yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • After upgrading from NC31 → NC32 → NC33 → NC34.0.5
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • Archive installation on shared hosting
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

After upgrading Nextcloud from version 31 to 34.0.5 (31 → 32 → 33 → 34.0.5), the App Store stopped working.

The same hosting environment worked correctly on Nextcloud 31.

Nextcloud now reports that the server has no working Internet connection. As a result, App Store categories do not load and update notifications no longer work.

The relevant error is:

ConnectException:
HTTP/2 is supported by the cURL handler,
however libcurl is built without HTTP/2 support.

phpinfo() reports:

cURL Information: 8.20.0
HTTP2: No

While investigating, I found GitHub issue #58528 and PR #59662, which appear to describe a very similar problem.

I am particularly interested in whether this could be related to GitHub issue #58528 and PR #59662, because my environment matches the reported symptoms very closely.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Use Nextcloud 34.0.5 on an environment where phpinfo() reports “HTTP2: No” for libcurl.

  2. Open the Apps page.

  3. App Store categories fail to load.

  4. Check the Nextcloud logs.

  5. Observe the ConnectException mentioning missing HTTP/2 support.

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

ConnectException:
HTTP/2 is supported by the cURL handler,
however libcurl is built without HTTP/2 support.

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

No relevant browser-side errors observed.

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

Not available.

This is a shared hosting environment (Lolipop! Japan), so I do not have access to Apache/nginx system logs.

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

No custom App Store configuration.

The following parameters are not set in config.php:

'has_internet_connection'
'appstoreenabled'
'appstoreurl'

All App Store settings are currently using defaults.

No custom App Store URL configured.

Apps

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

The issue occurs regardless of installed apps.

Most enabled apps are bundled with Nextcloud.

The only third-party app I explicitly installed is Music.

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

I also tested both PHP 8.3 (module mode) and PHP 8.4 (CGI mode), and the behavior was identical.
