NC Client incorrectly reverts changes seconds later

I frequently encounter an issue where the Nextcloud client reverts my changes to files—or even actions like moving or renaming them—just seconds later, overwriting them with the older version from the server. Even if I repeat the action, the Nextcloud client consistently overwrites it with the server’s version. This doesn’t happen constantly; it occurs sporadically—much like a migraine—but is persistent when it does. For instance, if I move a batch of files into a subdirectory, I can watch them reappear in the original directory within seconds. If I’m working in my editor and modify a line of code, I can watch the change get undone seconds after saving.

I have tried every solution I could find online or via AI. The server and client clocks are synchronized; the client is running version 33.0.5 (though this also happened with earlier versions) on the latest macOS (15.6), and the server is running version 32.0.9. The client uses standard folder synchronization, which otherwise works flawlessly. I’ve tried restarting the Nextcloud client and/or the entire PC, removing and re-setting up sync tasks, and uninstalling and reinstalling the client, yet the error keeps recurring. Since the issue isn’t constant, it’s difficult to reproduce or systematically test potential fixes. I’ve been trying to resolve this for over a year now.

If anyone has direct experience with this problem, I would appreciate any suggestions; this bug causes me hours of troubleshooting while programming whenever I fail to notice that Nextcloud has altered or reverted the code I just wrote.

So it has been an issue for the NC client before version 33?

If you change the files, (and before the initial state is redone), the changes are never synced to the server? These are not read-only shared folders?

Your server, there are any errors that the moving is not carried out or refused to be carried out? The logs might be interesting. Are these a lot of files in the folders, are you using file locking with redis?

Just a moment ago, I created a new text file (kahoot_relativpronomen.md), wrote a line in it, and saved it. After five seconds, it was replaced by an empty file, and my local file was saved alongside it marked as “conflicted.” However, after I wrote the line again and saved it, it remained intact.

You are not using redis and apcu? This caching solutions reduce the load on the database.

If that is not possible, you need to improve the settings for your database caches, and check if all the clean up procedures (especially regular cron job) is running properly.

For the cache settings, there are also scripts that analyze your settings and give recommendations. tuning-primer.sh, mysqltuner.pl, … (use your favorite search engine)

Please confirm:

  • your MySQL/MariaDB server’s configuration transaction isolation level matches Nextcloud’s database requirements (READ-COMMITTED)
  • you don’t have any warnings about missing indices in the Nextcloud UI under Admin settings->Overview
  • You are running an LTS version of MariaDB or MySQL that is on the latest patch level

After the above:
For the pool size in particular you can search for MySQL / MariaDB tuning guides (this is not Nextcloud specific) and monitor variables like Innodb_buffer_pool_wait_free,
Innodb_buffer_pool_write_requests,
and Innodb_buffer_pool_read_requests to see if there is still a pool sizing problem in your environment. These are even available via web UIs like PHPMyAdmin and Adminer.
