Memories App cannot create or manage albums when Photos App is deactivated

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 31
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Ubuntu Server 24.04.02 LTS
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • AIO with all modules inside of Docker
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • no

Summary of the issue you are facing:

Inside of Nextcloud, with the default Photos App deactivated, I cannot see or manage albums in the Memories App.

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Deactivate Photos
  2. Install Memories
  3. Try to create albums inside of Memories, all albums are gone and none can be created
  4. Activate Photos again
  5. Suddenly, all missing albums reappear and can be managed through Memories

The error message when trying to create an Album with the Photos App being deactivated is just a small toast notification with a red border saying “Album cannot be created”

Since I do not need Photos, I want to deactivate it in favor of Memories. What steps are necessary to safely remove Photos App without compromising basic functionality in Memories?

You cannot. The Memories app uses the Photos app for album support. See Memories: Configuration.

Thanks for the quick response. I overlooked this, sorry. As a workaround I resorted to using the Custom Menu app and disabling the menu item for the Photos app instead of disabling the app itself.
