Maps: No documentation / tutorial at all

Nextcloud Hub 10 (31.0.6)
Maps 1.5.0

I cannot find any documentation to answer the questions of a ā€œdumb userā€ who just wants to create maps as usual with some markers etc.

So I ask here:

  • what is the function of the ā€œstandard mapā€?
  • it is said that new maps are found in the folder ā€œfiles/Mapsā€ ? I created a map and I find an folder Maps/name of the map, but that folder is empty
  • I have added pois on that map and on the standard map as well and these pois are not shown when I open the map
I have to click on ā€œFavoritesā€ and with some luck I find a group of favorites with show up in a map
What is the sense of this behaviour? I want the favorites immediately visible and stored in the map where I add them to
This behaviour is unpredictable, sometimes the favorites are shown when clicking on ā€œmy favortitsā€, sometimes they don’t
  • How can I add a map to a file using the ā€œ/ā€
  • How to use different markers for POIs? the default yellow star is really nearly invisible on some layouts

What I want? I want maps in my Collective pages and elsewhere, maps where POIs show up and which I can embed on pages …

And please don’t tell that I should start to join any developer group for a better result, I am a user and not a programmer and NEXTCLOUD is praised as userfriendly :upside_down_face:

and some more:
It seems there is no way to import any KML or KMZ file, I tried in 3 different NC instances, all with the same actual version

This is so frustrating!

read the docs: GitHub - nextcloud/maps: šŸŒšŸŒšŸŒŽ The whole world fits inside your cloud!

I don’t really use Nextcloud Maps. I think Nextcloud Memories is sometimes better suited for displaying images on a map. But I don’t really use that either.

All my images are indexed. It can be on folder /. Therefore ā€˜Default’ shows all images. From here you can also copy the images to other folders / maps.

You can move images from one map to another map. Right click on the image on the map (ā€œCopy to mapā€).

I think Nextcloud Maps can be a nice thing to show all the pictures you have geolocalised. It might be better if the individual maps could manage a list of folders with geolocalised images. It is also a pity that the tracks (GPX files) cannot seem to be assigned to a map. Default format is GPX and not format KML or KMZ. I think you can convert it.

As I have a large number of images and GPX files, I do not manage them via Nextcloud Maps. I use an individual self programmed software based on PHP, JavaScript, HTML,CSS, Leaflet and OpenStreetMap. Nextcloud Maps is more for the overview, so I like to have +100 images together on one single map. But I think that is perfectly adequate for many users.

basic suggestion for improvement
Nevertheless, it would be nice if Nextcloud Maps and Nextcloud Memories were to consistently implement the folder concept of Nextcloud Files. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In my case, I structure images in folders and subfolders and would be happy if, for example, Maps or Albums were simply a list of folders. In addition, the structure for the maps and albums (name, configuration, …) would then simply be stored in the database. That’s it.

I already read the doc so many times. It is pure Public Relation, no information what I need at all

Yes, I can admire the screenshots, but I need answers!

I do not want images on a map, I want to create maps! With POIs!
So why do you tell me about photos?
Is this a misunderstanding? Is MAPS only for photos??

in Nextcloud?

possibly? your requirements are not very clear.

take a look at: https://www.openstreetmap.de/, maybe that is what you’re looking for?

Sorry.

For POI you can use favorite. With right click on a position you can add a favorite. If you like you can create a new favorite group. With click on the left side you can activate one or more favorite groups for the map. You can zoom to bounds. You can Create share link and then Copy share link in the menu.
