How is the photo placement feature of the maps app supposed to work?
I have imported a “device” (an old phonetrack log) and I have “linked it to the map”, at which point it asked for a “photos folder” (I selected mine).
Then nothing happens except a notification appears saying “Folder is not a map” (duh - it’s a folder full of photos, as I was prompted to select).
I’ve also tried the “suggest photo locations” option, but this offers no suggestions, just “cancel” and “load more”, which does nothing.
if I click on the settings in this panel, I can select the “Location sources” - either “tracks” (empty) or “devices” (also empty, even though I have 4 devices listed in the left hand panel).
How is this supposed to work? I have a .gpx file and a folder of photos which have no geodata. Isn’t it supposed to correlate the two by date and add locations to the photographs?
I’ve tried everything - and at one point (after adding a “device”) I managed to get it to find and save locations of some of my photos, but I can’t understand how it chooses which photos it wants to match up with the gpx track.
for example, I can see it has gpx data for my trip to EMFcamp in Gloucester, but despite the GPX track and photos taken there (using the same device), it does not seem to have identified any pictures on the map there (I can see them in the photos app at the correct date).
I’m just baffled by this. Why can’t I just select a GPX file and a photo folder and have it just get on with the job of correlating the images? Why is this so complicated and why doesn’t it work reliably?
I can’t see any practical difference between the handful of photos it worked for, and the ones it didn’t.
Again - how is this supposed to work? I can’t seem to see ANY GPX tracks on the map (logged with phonetrack), unless I import them as “devices” (there appears to be no way to import tracks).
Is it supposed to just automatically find tracks? if so, why doesn’t it show them?
I’ve tried maps:scan-data and maps:scan-tracks and nothing changed.
maps:scan-tracks did indicate it had found the three gpx files I have in files - but doesn’t seem to have done anthing with them.
