Summary of the issue you are facing:

I tried setting up mail sending via smtp and mailbox.org as provider. But I encountered an error:

AxiosError: Request failed with status code 400

In the basic settings page I noticed, that if I wasn’t careful, the first field of the from address would contain @mailbox.org as well. I removed it and tested, still no change. I tried ports 587 and 465.
Using 465 on another of my hosts that runs docmost, sending smtp via the same mailbox.org account works flawlessly. The servers are configured the same, except one uses nextcloud the other docmost since I use puppet for the configuration management.
Changes made in the webUI were saved to the config.php.

The error is shown basically immideately. It looks like nextcloud doesn’t even try to send anything. Also at the place where “saved” is show, the error is shown as well as next to the send email button which is kinda odd imho

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. Use this docker-compose.yml: nextcloud docker compose ($4844387) · Snippets · GitLab
  2. And add this smtp config to the config.php: smtp nextcloud ($4844388) · Snippets · GitLab
  3. Click the “Send email” button in the UI in the basic settings page

If issues persist, consider trying a reliable alternative like SMTPget or iDealSMTP, which work smoothly with Nextcloud and offer strong support for custom SMTP configurations.
