Running across issues with both classic sync and VFS (File Provider?) on MacOS desktop versions 34.0.3.
Classic Sync Issue. The issue was moving a file between folders it would appear to work locally and then after a few seconds the file would automatically move back to the original position; assuming after sync attempt with server. No activity logs. No success even after restarting the desktop client.
I thought maybe because one computer (Mac Mini) is using VFS while the other (MacBook Pro) is using Classic. Went ahead and moved the MacBook Pro to VFS.
VFS Issue. Now a different issue happened. Folder is a sub-folder of âAlways keep downloadedâ. I attempted to move a file that was open (unknowingly) in the other computer. Instead of moving the file made a copy of the file in the new folder. I right-clicked the file and saw an âUnlock Fileâ option. Selected it and a pop-up from Nextcloud Client processed and âunlockedâ the file. However, I was still unable to move without it making a copy and also not able to delete the original file.
Realizing the file was open on the other computer, I closed the file on the other computer, deleted the copy that was made on the original computer and tried the move again. No change. I right clicked the file and the âUnlock Fileâ option was still present but selecting that reports the file is not locked. The file will also not delete (CMD-Delete) from local. I tested a move on a different file that was not open and the move worked as expected and syncâd properly to the server.
I eventually tried moving the file in the Nextcloud web interface. It moved without issue. But now the local folder did not sync the change. File still states locked and cannot delete. I also have the following results on this client.
- Creating a new file on Server; does not sync to Local
- Creating a 2 new files on Local; shows up in Server
- Deleting 1 new file from Local; removed on server
- Deleting the other new file from Local; File not deleted on Local
- Through all of this Sync button did nothing
- âAll Syncedâ never changed.
- âReset File Provider Domainâ fixed the problem but also dropped all of the âAlways keep downloadedâ - Glad this is here but is a break glass not solving the problem.
We have been using Nextcloud in my company for 6 years and minor issues we have experienced has been tolerable and not impactful to our daily work. Issue have always addressed; thank you. This is the first time I had a bug that is dislodging my trust in the platform and has me question our future with this platform. I do not want to leave. I do not want the alternative. I recognize the effort put in by everyone in a complex desktop ecosystem; problems can happen, but trusting sync with a mobile workforce, the number 1 purpose of Nextcloud, is paramount. I hope this finds right attention to have this addressed.
As a side, it would have been nice to have the client indicate âfile in useâ when action is taken against a file.
For what it is worth: I like that in Classic Sync I can place each synced folder into specific locations on the Local machine. VFS is great to access non-synced folders (i.e. large external SMB shares) but unable to choose Local location (symlink is not the answer for me
) . It would be great to know if Classic is planned to be deprecated or not.
