Looking for managed nextcloud with mail server

It seems like an obvious combination, but I can not find a provider that offer a managed Nextcloud with a mail server as a package. I was looking at Hetzner, they offer a great deal for a managed Nextcloud instance but I would have to buy a separate package to get a mail server. Hetzners Nextcloud seems to be relatively up to date. I was wondering why Hetzner does not show up as a Nextcloud partner.

I was also looking at IONOS, their hosted deal is also pretty good, but mail server is extra and pretty pricey. I could not find any information what version of Nextcloud IONOS is running. It would be great if somebody could share his experience with IONOS or Hetzner.

Hi
Do you have a Gmail address?

You can start by using your Gmail account settings:
Gmail SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
Gmail SMTP username: your Gmail address
Gmail SMTP Password: Your Password You will probably need to create an application password in Gmail
Gmail SMTP port (TLS): 587
or
Gmail SMTP port (SSL): 465

By entering this configuration in Nextcloud your server will be able to send emails .
You have reached a mail sending limit
You may see this message if you send an email to more than 500 recipients in a single email and/or more than 500 emails sent in a day.

When you receive this error, you should be able to send emails again within 1 to 24 hours.

I would like to use my own domain for accessing NC and sending emails. So Gmail would not be an option.

Nextcloud is not a mail server and does not offer mail servers as an app. In Nextcloud Mail, for example, you can integrate any mail server (e.g. with IMAP). You either need two hosting provider (Nextcloud and Mail) or one hoster who offers both. Nameserver is no problem because Nextcloud uses A-/C-NAME-DNS-entry and Mailing uses MX-DNS-entry for your personal domain. The domain you can buy at the same hoster or at another (third) hoster.

Yes you can use IONOS. And yes you must pay money for email hosting. Another hoster may be e.g. https://www.hosting.de .

Hi

You just need to buy for a standard hosting for websites that is compatible with Nextcloud  All my NC customers have just a standard package for web hosting (includes domain name, emails, website, mysql/postgres) and we install NC into it and voilà

You can also as stated by @Cisco30 use a separate email hoster and setup it in NC !

Perhaps one more addition. The advantage of free software and free choice of provider is precisely that you can choose not just one, but several providers. This allows you to choose the best Nextcloud host and the best email host. In addition, you can do without Nextcloud Talk, for example, and use Jitsi or BigBlueButton instead. Or how about one of the countless Mastodon instances, perhaps Element/Matrix with another host, etc.?

This is also called Fediverse, even though Nextcloud and Mailing may not necessarily belong to it.

Or do you only use one online shop when you buy things?

It is no problem to combine a Nextcloud hoster with an email hoster. With Microsoft 365, it could be more difficult. There you get Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft Outlook/Exchange together (Link).

Since we’re talking about self-hosted solutions, I’d like to share a different perspective.

Everything depends a lot on the actual use case.

For example, I self-host everything at home on Proxmox and since I only have a few users, I simply run a separate VM with my own mail server (Mailu) next to the VM where Nextcloud is running. On that mail server I host multiple e-mail domains with mailboxes, and all of them are connected into my Nextcloud instance. That way I keep full control and the integration works exactly as I need it.

So if you’re comfortable with managing things yourself, one option is exactly this – separate VMs (or containers) for Nextcloud and for mail, on the same infrastructure.

But if you have more users or you don’t want to deal with server management, it’s usually easier to go with a provider that offers managed Nextcloud hosting and then combine it with an external mail hosting service.

Just for the sake of completeness. Nextcloud AIO offers Stalwart as an optional community container, which can be installed via the Nextcloud AIO interface: How to use Nextcloud AIO community containers- Nextcloud

That said, hosting a mail server is one of the more involved things you can do, and you absolutely need a public clean IP address with a PTR record pointing to the mail domain. (Yes, I know you can also use a mail gateway with a public IP and then host the actual mail server locally with a dynamic IP, but that only makes things more complicated than they already are)

So if you’re not familiar with mail servers, I’d recommend to use a mail provider even with a self-hosted Nextcloud instance. And yes, this usually costs money if you want to have multiple (or unlimited) mailboxes and/or use your own domain.

And no, I’m not aware of any providers, that offer manged Nextcloud instances and email, in a single package, but there are certainly providers that offer both things, like e.g. Hetzner or IONOS.

It’s normal that you need to order an additional package. With us, you can use one domain for Nextcloud and one for your emails. If you want everything on one server, we can offer you a Managed Server including Managed Nextcloud and your own mail server. However, the prices start at 150.00€ per month.

The topic author clearly asked for a managed hosting solution.

Thx for all the recommendations, but the discussion drifted a little bit in the wrong direction. I do understand that NC is not an email server but a client. I am looking for a provider that offers mail service and NC. @JABAHOSTING thx for that offer but thats a little bit over budget since I am looking for a family cloud.

I understand the desire to have everything in one place - but: There is an advantage of trusting your email and your Nextcloud to different providers. Namely, that it’s less likely both go down at the same time. (I speak from experience.)

I’d trust my email to mailbox.org, for example, and use the Hetzner Nextcloud. You can also get the IONOS basic email packages, they start at 1,50 Euro per month per mailbox.

I assume that you can then configure the mail app in your Hetzner Nextcloud to receive and send email for your users through your email provider. You may not be able to configure login via email/IMAP credentials, because that requires config.php edits?

We host multiple Nextcloud installations next to web (most Wordpress) and mailservices. Our hosting get a 100% score with internet.nl. So you can contact us if you are interested. ‘carien.eu’ is our website
