Have I missed on the basic backup function for Nextcloud? And yes, I do not want to learn and teach my family members to restore single files from an backup via borg or some terminal commands.
IMHO: Backup is basic and should be covered by an Nextcloud GmbH internal feature with an UI. Should be easy-peasy to set up, e.g. to an external storage mount. At best the desktop client integrates that functionality too. e.g. setting up incremental backups to a local NAS or local connected USB Drive, besides the webapp to backup to an external cloud storage (encrypted).
How do you do backup as a normal standard user which uses Nextcloud from e.g. Hetzner or Ionos? How do you explain to use your solution to your mom, siblings, spouse?
well… tbh the latest release seems to be made for NC28. which is behind for at least 5 versions to NC33 (NC35 just got released)
and though I can see some small changes on the repository.
Though I wouldn’t wait for another release pretty soon (my personal opinion).
well.. Nextcloud is a community project. Which means: if you think this is important why not coding it yourself rather than telling someone else doing that for you?
I see that. Unfortunately, I am not coder and most people which are even willing to change to digital sovereign products are not. I am more thinking of a bigger picture here. Helping more private people transitioning to Nextcloud might even help Nextcloud GmbH to find more small business owners to move from Microsoft and Google to Nextcloud in the end due to wider user acceptance.
e.g. my mom owned a cosmetic studio back in the days. There was no way she would change from Microsoft in regards of office, online storage and so. She simply does not knew about Nextcloud and how to use it. If I would have been able to introduce Nextcloud to her in private use I am sure she would have changed to Nextcloud for business use. Especially for sake of convenience due to using the same UI.
Anyhow. It seem to me Nextcloud is moving in the “wrong” direction by focusing mainly on bigger companies which can afford to host their own instances backup servers in the background and so on. I see the strategy behind it but “simple” solutions like including a DAVx5 like service and backup into the AIO product would really really help every “normal” family admin (I am not speaking about people with a home lab and 5h a week tweaking their Nextcloud instances).
Looks like I will still be stuck with Google Workplace for a while till a hoster figured out a way to offer user friendly UI for backup and mobile integration.
as you have noticed yourself, that’s not the scope of Nextcloud GmbH and it never was (and I personally don’t see any change of that in the near and middle future).
but referrring to your mom: she could try a managed cloud at some trustworthy hoster (you already mentioned Hetzner and Ionos) since THEY usually offer backups (included or as a paid add-on).
well I’d say that’s opinion vs opinion.
why? there is this DAVx5 thing and it works like a charm. so 1) it only affects android and 2) it should be integrated natively into android, itself.
as a matter of fact: you’ll set it up once and that’s it. even MY 85 yo mom uses it (without knowing that I installed it - it took me 5-10min to install and configure it. that’s it)
have fun with that and wave byebye to your data-souvereignity
