Is Maps still actively maintained?

Hi,

When I saw the promoted “Maps” app on the store, I was quite excited to be able to manage my POI/favourites on Nextcloud. However, the latest release was 6 months ago, it’s NC31 compatible only.

NC31 is EOL in a month now, and even though some PR have been submitted to make the app NC32 compatible, there’s still no release.

As a matter of fact, whether we should downgrade to NC31 to use the app, or disable it (my option). Reading comments, it looks like the app is slowly updated and it’s not the first time users face the dilmena to hold back from upgrading to a major release, or simply disable the app.

Hence: is the map actively maintained/developed? As it’s promoted on the store, I would tend to answer positvely, but we haven’t been able to use it on NC32 for months now.

Anyways, thanks for your hardwork, self-hosting one’s cloud is priceless.

I encountered the same problem and solved it finally by switching over to GPXPod, which is basically the same as Maps (even with the same main programmer behind it), but with a couple of options more. And most importantly, GPXPod is actively maintained and works with the newest release of Nextcloud!

In my opinion, they should drop Maps completely and make GPXPod a featured app…

Thanks you for pointing to GPXPod, looks neat! But it seems to miss some Maps features like having photos directly on map, or managing POIs?

Personally, I never used these features so I didn’t mind.

Does GPXPod include having pictures and contacts show up on the map?

The tracks are cool, but having a geographical layout of where pictures were taken is pretty cool.

No it doesn’t

For displaying photos - also directly on a map - please check the Nextcloud App Memories https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/memories

OK, if we have to replace a “Featured” app by a collection of other apps, I guess users can adapt according to their use cases, but then I wonder why Maps is still featured while comments have been accumulating for months on github asking for a NC32 update, with no feedback. If we have to migrate to gpxpod+Memories+xxx, so be it, but that “Featured” mention is misleading to my eyes.

Yow, i am missing that module too. I see, the team is very small and the main developer discontinued updating maps and developes gpxpod now. Very nice, but the killer feature of showing the locations of our contacts is gone now.
:crying_cat:

Is there any information on this yet?

The current situation leaves me also a bit perplexed. Maps has always been a little behind. But for versions 32 and 33, Maps isn’t just untested, it doesn’t work. There’s no activity to be seen on GitHub either.

When upgrading my instance, I always relied on the “Featured Apps.” My hope was that these apps would be more reliably maintained.

I use Maps with the image function for documentation and as a smart notepad on construction sites. GPXpod isn’t a good replacement for this.

Thre’s already a pretty long issue thread on GitHub about this:

To be honest, I don’t think anyone on this forum will be able to tell you much more about it.

You could try upvoting the GitHub issue or leaving a comment there, or maybe offer your help, although I’m not sure what’s needed to get it going again.

EDIT: It doesn’t really seem to be stalled, since there are still commits every now and then. So yeah, not sure why they haven’t released compatible versions for 32 and 33 yet.

Yes, there are some commits, but if you exclude dependencies-related commits, there are quite sparse, and not reviewed. I guess the technical debt is quite big now, and it’s one thing to make it work in NC32, it’s another to adapt it to 33+

It is one of my most important maps. The positioning of my contacts and the ability to calculate the route to reach them is really cool.
If i find any alternative, i am quiet shure i will switch over. Sadly i am not able to pay the developer to revive ist.
