Is a remote install on shared hosting viable?

Guessing root access is a requirement regardless, but I’m trying to decide if I absolutely have to deal with vps at this stage. My initial traffic is going to be so low that I might just set up a Pi.

Thanks so much

Joe

Only for advanced features or if settings of your shared hosting are not optimal.

Perhaps you should consider a Managed Nextcloud as a third alternative alongside VPS and Pi. Whether you have your Nextcloud operated by a hoster within a VPS or hosted entirely is practically irrelevant. There are providers who offer you a fully managed Nextcloud for 5 euros a month with 500 MB or 1 TB, for example.

There are also web hosts that allow you SSH access with your normal user (not root), who can, however, send occ commands.

This sounds promising. Can you name some such providers?

Also, assuming I have any problems with the provider, how feasible is it to take my data and run? In some other convos, I have heard that it’s easy to get the data but difficult to get the user accounts and plugins/settings.

In order to be able

to take my data and run

I chose nextcloud all-in-one
with remote borg backup,
which makes replicating my entire cloud on another platform a breeze:

  • restore a backup from remote
  • run the aio install command and
  • on localhost:8080 You then choose restore from backup instead of setting the domain name.

I decided for my own hardware, but can switch to a hosted server as a fallback in case it fails.

That will become even more convenient with
aio integration of remote backup.

In Germany e.g. Storage Share . Where do you come from?

I use BorgBase.com, as shown in the link above.
This will also be built into AIO . I appreciate this because I am working with non-IT people on a nextcloud infrastructure and want to make myself replaceable in the long term. And I think that I can find enough people in our organisation that I can teach this to.

I am in the states. I looked at Hetzner, I couldn’t see if they offered this. Obvs no clue if they support stateside.

I found out that some people offer region limited services in conversation with Ionos. I find that super weird, but whatever. The real interesting part is, Ionos said that they base it purely on the billing address. So if I know somebody in GB (In Ionos case) I can still get an account if I’m in the states.

I have a couple friends in Germany, I was thinking about making a reseller. Of course the money is peanuts, but it’s still money.
