Getting help

In order to help you as efficiently (and quickly!) as possible, please fill in as much of the below requested information as you can.

Before clicking submit: Please check if your query is already addressed via the following resources:

(Utilizing these existing resources is typically faster. It also helps reduce the load on our generous volunteers while elevating the signal to noise ratio of the forums otherwise arising from the same queries being posted repeatedly).

Some or all of the below information will be requested if it isn’t supplied; for fastest response please provide as much as you can. :heart:

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • 33.0.0
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • Ubuntu Server 24.04.4
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • nginx 1.30.2
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • nginx 1.30.2
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • 8.5
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • No
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • After installing nextcloud-33.0.0.zip after purging earlier versions of Nextcloud
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • sudo unzip nextcloud-33.0.0.zip -d /var/www/
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • No

Summary of the issue you are facing:

[I’m trying to install Nextcloud after a malware attack ruined a previous install. I unzip the Nextcloud-33.0.0.zip package to /var/www/, chmod to www-data, then go to the web address. The background is zoomed way in so the Nextcloud logo is fuzzy and fills the entire window, and the Installation Wizard already has my old username and password populated.]

Steps to replicate it (hint: details matter!):

  1. wget https://downloads.nextcloud.com/server/releases/latest.zip

  2. sudo unzip nextcloud-33.0.0.zip -d /var/www/ && sudo chown www-data:www-data /var/www/nextcloud/ -R

  3. Go to nextcloud.mydomain.tld

Log entries

Nextcloud

Please provide the log entries from your Nextcloud log that are generated during the time of problem (via the Copy raw option from Administration settings->Logging screen or from your nextcloud.log located in your data directory). Feel free to use a pastebin/gist service if necessary.

/var/www/nextcloud/data/nextcloud.log is empty.

Web Browser

If the problem is related to the Web interface, open your browser inspector Console and Network tabs while refreshing (reloading) and reproducing the problem. Provide any relevant output/errors here that appear.

Can't find console or Network tabs

Web server / Reverse Proxy

The output of your Apache/nginx/system log in /var/log/____:

Nothing relating to Nextcloud

Configuration

Nextcloud

The output of occ config:list system or similar is best, but, if not possible, the contents of your config.php file from /path/to/nextcloud is fine (make sure to remove any identifiable information!):

<?php
$CONFIG = array (
  'instanceid' => 'Redacted',
  'passwordsalt' => 'Redacted',
  'secret' => 'Redacted',
  'trusted_domains' =>
  array (
    0 => 'nextcloud.mydomain.tld',
  ),
  'datadirectory' => '/var/www/nextcloud-data',
  'dbtype' => 'pgsql',
  'version' => '33.0.0.16',
  'overwrite.cli.url' => 'https://nextcloud.mydomain.tld',
  'dbname' => 'Redacted',
  'dbhost' => 'localhost:5432',
  'dbtableprefix' => '',
  'dbuser' => 'Redacted',
  'dbpassword' => 'Redacted',
);

Apps

The output of occ app:list (if possible).

Tips for increasing the likelihood of a response

  • Use the preformatted text formatting option in the editor for all log entries and configuration output.
  • If screenshots are useful, feel free to include them.
    • If possible, also include key error output in text form so it can be searched for.
  • Try to edit log output only minimally (if at all) so that it can be ran through analyzers / formatters by those trying to help you.

Are you trying to install using the prior config or database?

Are you unzipping into a new directory or existing one?

Maybe post a screenshot.

No, I was starting with a brand-new PostgreSQL database.
New directory.

In other news, I was finally able to run the Wizard in Chrome instead of Firefox, and it seems to be working, Now my problem is I have a white background with black text; I appear to have lost the background image, and I’m unable to scroll up or down.

Here’s a screenshot showing the zoomed-in background:
