I need help with Auto-Upload on Android

I have massive problems in understanding and configuring the NextCloud App on Android for automatic upload.

On each folder, I can then the option to “synchronize “ it, which is not what I want.

I just want new photos done with the Camera App or stored from other Apps be uploaded to my NextCloud instance.

In the menu, I see “Uploads”, which are currently empty and in the right upper corner of this, is a toggle between “pause” and “play” symbols.

I assume that this pauses or continues uploads when there are some and it seems that the “pause” symbol needs to be shown for uploads to happen.

In the settings, I see a group “Synchronize” with two options “automatic upload” "and “internal 2-way synchronization”.

I disabled the second option and can only find “create your own folder” in the three-dot menu.

I touched that and choose the regular Camera folder for “local folder” and then also “Camera” for the remote folder on the NextCloud server.

I upload only on free WiFi and not only when charging the battery.

My questions:

a) When I try to move files from /Photos to /Camera, they will not move.

Don’t know why and what to do.

b) When I switch between folders, i always need to drag down for a reload, otherwise the folder that was shown before will still be displayed.

That is more than annoying.

c) When I open the “Media” view, I have the option to select a media folder, but as it seems, only one folder?

My older uploaded content is in /CONTENT and the automatic uploads go to /Camera - so I can never see this new uploads. On the website version of NextCloud, I can select multiple folders to be displayed. Is there some trick to do the same in the Android App?

d) I find it more that strange, that in the Upload settings, I can only select to create a new folder, which then allows to select a local and a remote folder. But I cannot see, check or change the current configuration. Is that to be expected?

e) I don’t understand the option “upload also existing files” when creating such a new pair of local and remote folder. What does this mean?

Great many thank for any help!

That means, that older files also will be uploaded.
Try this setting with your Camera folder on your device and unselect it, after upload has finished, if it worked.

btw.: It is better to use the Nextcloud Android app from F-Droid, because it works in many cases better than from Google Play.

Many thanks.

What happens when I enable this and (some) files were already uploaded?

Will they be uploaded again, or skipped?

I will seek out F-Droid!

See the upload settings you defined. Below the target folder, “Upload via WLAN only” etc. there is a selection, what will happen, if the target files just exists.
There you may select that “Server file wins”.

Thank!

I just noticed another problem:

Despite me selecting the internal Camera folder as source and /Camera as target, I just noticed that the latest uploads did not end there, but in /Photos!

How can that be?

How to fix this?

I need the automatic upload in /Camera - as a manual upload also uploads to this folder and I have no need for double uploads to different folders.

Any idea?

There are two uploads for the camera:

  • pictures
  • videos

So the upload has to be configured twice.
If both are configured and still the uploads into Photos will be done, try to restart your device.

But both new Videos and Photos got uploaded to /Photos!

Is your setting like this (but “/Camera” as “Remote Folder”)?

Oh, wow!

That screenshot helped me, it can be configured for each of the “types” of images that are listed (Images, Videos, Screenshots, WhatsApp, Telegram, …).

And I understand now, that it can be configured separately for those types.

Last question:

What is the first group or type of files that is shown?

It has a folder symbol with a star in it, but it is not my favorites.

It seems to contain older images and videos, but I am not sure what it is.

Sorry, but I do not know, what you mean. Can you post a screenshot?

I am not 100% sure but a few months back google changed there policy by which the nc app from google play can no longer use automatic uploads.

the solution is using the version from f-droid which do not need to follow the google policy.

There are several post about not being able to auto upload.

Hope this can help you fix your issue.

Automatic upload worked all the time, but not “delete after upload”.
Google went back after Nextcloud critisized them.

Thanks for correcting me and update.

I did install the F-Droid version of the App and things look better now, thanks for this hint!

I am away from my Android phone, but found an image over Google:

Here you can see the folder icon with the star in it, beside “Alarms”.

What does that stand for, please?

I tested it on my device:
If you add a local (Android-) folder to favourites and create a sync with that folder, it will get the asterisk (=Favourite) in the folder icon.

So, in the file-manager app of your Android device there is the “Alarms”-folder added to the favourites (on my Android 15 - device with a :yellow_heart:-icon).

Is your problem with the upload solved now?
