I love notes and now we can also use it on linux!

I’m using Nextcloud for 2 years now and its been great. Not without issues but I’m insanely impressed with the state this project is in and the improvements that keep coming instead of the enshittification that proprietary apps seem to fall prey to.

One of my favorite apps is notes. Its far from the only feature I use but its probably the most used in total. I use it on my pc (linux), old mobile (ios), new mobile (postmarketos) and laptop (linux). I was only able to use it on the web on linux, sadly. Until now.

This is both praise for Nextcloud, -notes and “iotas”. A very low key app that actually has a great sync function with notes. Please leave a star for the dev (not affiliated!) on github so the app continues! I’m not gonna share the link since I dont want anyone to think this is some kind of ad. you can find it on flatpak under the name.

To be clear: This is the ONLY linux app for nextcloud notes that I have found in a usable state since 2 Years. Its a real gamechanger since nextcloud has become kind of my only office solution now and taking notes is so vital.

Yeah, Iotas is fine, but there is also QOwnNotes. Have you tried it? I have been using it for at least six years and it has been great.

You can also try QownnotesAPI from the Nextcloud appstore to add Trash and Version access via Qownnotes desktop application. Backwards compatible with any other way of accessing your notes.

I’m trying to recall why I stopped using QOwnNotes.

Well, I’ll do it then. I mean, it’s FOSS and it’s hosted on Gnome’s GitLab, so it’s not like anyone is going to benefit financially from people using it.

Oh, and I agree, it’s a clean and simple application (like the non-rich text modes of the Nextcloud Notes web app) that blends in perfectly with the Gnome desktop (unlike QOwnNotes)

I used Zettlr for a long time. That was before Nextcloud. It was pretty handy on Linux Flatpak. However, there were some bugs and the loading time became annoying, when I changed to Joplin. Joplin at first was quite a change, but a few plugins later, I find it superior to OneNote and Word.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages to Iotas? Are there any differences? I somewhere read, that it should be possible to use a Nextcloud notes app, to edit/create Joplin notes, and that they are synced between both worlds. Is that correct? Something like a corporation, between Joplin and Nextcloud was in the news, some years ago…

Personally, it was because Qownnotes does not do sync. You need to download the Desktop App in order to sync folders locally in order for it to see them. I am not a fan of electron apps, so I do not use the NC desktop app.

The API is for trash and versioning but not sync.

Which App do you think is electron based?
The desktop Client is made with C++/Qt. Same as QOwnNotes.

I stand corrected, you are correct.
It has been many years since I last used it.
I was thinking of a different app when I wrote my comment.

Iotas works very well as a desktop application for Nextcloud Notes. However, it is much simpler than Joplin or QOwnNotes, which is fine for me, as I only use Nextcloud Notes for simple note snippets, not for more extensive things like documentation or wikis. For the latter, Joplin or QOwnNotes are probably better suited.

But why not give it a try and see for yourself if it suits your needs…

todo.sh would also be cool.

Iota and notes
+ve

  • I really like Iota on gnome,
  • makes it really simple to access Notes on Nextcloud.
  • simple interface
    -ve
  • Notes could do with a more extensive way of categorising the notes like Joplin. I have too many categories now, for home, work, hobbies, clubs, volunteer work etc to make it easy to search, find myself adding similar categories by accident because I couldn’t find what category I had done before for something similar. Any ideas on this would be gratefully received.

Joplin
+Ve

  • I like Joplin, nice interface,
  • plenty of features.
    -ve
  • but it doesn’t have a Nextcloud interface for website
  • is slow to sync using WebDAV instead of using the Nextcloud app.
