How to Setup Photo Cloudstorage for a large group

Hey Folks,

I am setting up a Cloud Storage Server for Photos.

A close relative of mine recently passed away and I want to setup a cloud for Friends & Family to all access over a shared link, where they can upload Photos & Videos.

I’ve never done this, and normally I’d dig in for a week or two to get this all together myself, but currently that is just too much, with the loss & bureaucratic overhead I gotta deal with right now.

I would be very thankful for some pointers on how to do best what I wanna achieve, even just links to old posts that answer my questions, since I don’t have the resources and time to do this all by myself right now.

I’ve set up my Nextcloud over Hertzner Storage Share, using NX11.

It’s running on Nextcloud Hub 9 (30.0.6).

I think I don’t need help configuring the Server, Hertzner did that quite well for me. But what apps to use and which settings are important for me to get right to get the functionality of a Photo & Video storage, shared and accessed by many, often not tech savvy, people.

So far, I’ve added the Group Files App and created a folder that’s shared via link with two subfolders, and I have people who will help me test things.

Are there any important settings I need to change for this, Apps to add, etc.?

I think you have already taken the right steps. Using a Managed Nextcloud was a good idea and Hetzner Storage Share was also a good decision. The use of Group folders (Nextcloud 30) from Nextcloud 31 onwards, then called Team folders, was also a good idea.

Maybe this much. Nextcloud is intended for managing files such as images and videos. However, you won’t be able to prevent your friends and family from uploading normal files there too. Or I wouldn’t go to the trouble of trying to configure it. Better ask them to upload only pictures and videos in group folders. That should be sufficient.

It is also possible to use apps to display images. You won’t really be able to ensure that your friends and family only use photo apps. I also usually view images and videos directly in the Files app and then via the grid view.

All in all, take a look at the options offered by Group folders you have installed. It may be useful if you specify a suitable directory structure where people can upload pictures and videos. Of course, this person can also extend this structure. Don’t be too precise in the use of possibly right. Nobody will delete content on purpose. It is better to make backup copies.

Authorised persons can log in to Nextcloud and upload or view the images and videos. You can search the internet for Group folders nextcloud to find more detailed instructions.
