How to avoid receiving password when sharing a file

When I share a file by email, and I set a password to it, the password is sent to me (the initiator). Is it possible to avoid this since the password is sent in clear and I don’t want to leave any trace of it?

Thanks!

As the initiator, I do not receive an e-mail.

Overall, the combination of email and password in Nextcloud is completely useless. This means that two emails are sent to the same person. One with the link and one with the password. I don’t know what anyone wanted to achieve with this, but it has nothing to do with security.

I would simply create a share with a password (the share is not bound to an email anyway) and then I would send the email manually. If the password has a security function, then I would send the password via an alternative method, e.g. WhatsApp or SMS. If not, you can send the link and the password in a joint e-mail and also send a few greetings.

If you can install apps, you can take a look at the Secrets app. Then you can send the password in a secure way (burn after reading) and after confirm then you send the share with set password manually without sending the password. That would be secure.

When I share by email actually, the recipient receives the link to the file but not the password. I (the one who created the share) am the one receiving the password. Isn’t this the typical behavior?

No. With my Nextcloud 30.0.2 both e-mail go to the recipient. But there was another bug with e-mail in older Nextcloud versions.

I think that behavior can be disabled at the bottom of the Sharing prefs in Admin, not?

Yes there is an option at the end of https://cloud.server.tld/index.php/settings/admin/sharing. Can you test it?

Yes, but regardless of the settings the password is sent anyway to the person who shares the file (the initiator).

I did a test on my 30.0.2 setup, and it also sends out both mails to the recipient.

Even if you disable “Send password by mail” and “Reply to initiator” it in the Settings? I guess that’s a bug then. I’m still on 29 so can’t check.
