Forum restructuring and closing old topics

hello community frequent users might have noticed already that the forum crew is busy restructuring the forum in the last months. We already removed many categories making the navigation and browsing the forum easier.

Next step is to close old and stale topics with the goal to avoid people reviving posts from past years by adding meaningless comment. This action may cause notifications in rare cases and may show some “unread” topics - we didn’t find the way to silence it so far. We apologize any inconvenience and look forward to more structured future discussions.

We hope to complete the task by the end of this so that these unwanted messages will stop soon.

Hey, I’ve noticed that when searching for nextcloud help on external search engines, the top results are often old, ‘stale’ forum posts.

Sometimes the top result is a popular thread with no solution, where a newer thread might have a solution or current activity at least.

If someone searches for an error message and finds an old thread that is out of date, could there be a way to put links at the end of old topics pointing to more modern discussions? Similar to the links you’d find if you are making a new post, and the website says, “Is your topic similar to one of these?..”

In you search, you can try to add the Nextcloud version (e.g. update problem nextcloud 30), or put the year into your search.

In topics you can also see related tags, if you click on them, you can see more recent topics in this section.

Perhaps there are modules that do show similar topics automatically, for the moment these are recent topics but they are not really related.

If you add a link to an existing topic this will automatically add a link back… this would happen for closed topics… not sure if it applied to archived topics as well (at the moment we agreed to auto-close new topics after 90d, close existing topics without activity after 1y and archive topics with no activity since 3y).

@treesMcGees I agree this would help people to get on the right track. if you find such situations you are welcome to link newer more relevant topics to old ones making the forum more connected and improve user experience if they stumble over old outdated issues (hopefully search engines will take into account closed and acrhived status and I hope old issues visibility will decline over time).
